I lost 40 lbs last year, July to December (and won an excellent bottle of Cognac -- Remy Martin Louis XIII to be exact).
I have put 13 back on, so I am taking that back off now -- I work out, play league tennis, and eat right.
My key to success last time was to have one day (I chose Saturday) to eat anything I wanted, as long as I exercised and ate well the rest of the time. When Saturday came, I drank as much as I wanted, and if I cared to eat a dozen doughnuts, I did. Sunday AM, back on the wagon.
It works. being too stringent all the time exhausts you, and when you fall off the wagon, it always turns out you fall down the cliff as well.

I've been clobbered the last 6 weeks or so with a cold or flu. I've had no energy whatsoever and haven't been doing my workouts.
I have no idea how much weight I've put on (if any), but I can feel how out of shape I am. Getting old sucks. If I don't work out every day, I lose it quickly.

Welcome to the thread, Prebe!Prebe wrote:I wouldn't think so. If you, for a prolonged period of time, starve your body, your general metabolism will go down however.I am still tracking my calories. I noticed that on some days I am not eating enough fat, according to the diet goals on the tracking site I am using. I wonder if that's a problem. Even when I do eat "enough" fat, it's usually on the low side of the range.
This (contrary to popular belief) can't happen without: a: Your average body temperature going down, or b: your activity level going down. The activity level can be HIGHLY subconscious.
It has been shown that office workers performing the same job have as big a variation as 25% of overall energy expenditure, simply from differences in the non-exercise related movements. Things like getting up and opening windows, shufling in your seat, stretching, using the stairs etc. It was a real eye opener to me to make the calculation, that I (working on the 5th floor) will actually use up energy coresponding to 1 g of pure fat just by walking up the stairs. And that is using a 100% energy efficiency on movement. Judging from my increased pulse, transpiration and respiration frequency AND my knowledge of biomechanics, it's likely to be a lot closer to 2 g
I was asked by Aliantha to join you guys over here, because I revealed (in the galley of all places) that I was trying to lose weight (40 lbs).
I am going for the Preb patented diet: Eat less, exercise more. Just about the most unpopular diet there is, but the only one that works.
When I say eat less I mean less energy, not less by volume.
So far just making the first two days af no candy, no junk-food, filling up on more lean protein less carbs at main meals, has gotten me three pounds of the way. Yes, yes, I know. It's water
What you said above about calorie intake, metabolism and weight loss makes a lot of sense to me.
And I used to go on the type of diet you are trying. Specifically, I found that cutting fat, salt, and sugar made a big difference. It's not so easy anymore, now that I'm older.

Do any of the rest of you deal with stress/comfort eating? That seems to be my biggest problem and even though I know a lot of things that are supposed to help, it all seems to go out the window when I am either under a lot of stress or depressed (those usually seem to go together for me).
Right now I am job hunting and it is killing me!

Absolutely! I have a lot of problem controlling my eating when I am stressed/depressed/studying.rbwright wrote:Do any of the rest of you deal with stress/comfort eating? I am trying to eat things that are filling and low in calories, like raw vegetables, and drinking water or tea (unsweetened) instead of stuffing my face with high calorie stuff when I am stressed.

Hami: Your signature wouldn't happen to be Covenants "Hellfire and damnation" in the German translation would it?
I find a good trick is having sticks of carrots and cucumber in the fridge with a spicey dip made of 10% yoghurt on the side. Now, it sounds like fatty, and it is. But the trick is that you actually eat very little of the dip compared to the amount of raw vegetables you eat. So even if you stuff your face til you burst, you are probably going to end up consuming 100g's of yoghurt, meaning 10 g's of fat (app. 150 kCal), AND you have ruined your appetite with 300-400 g's of raw veggies
Which is (and should be) a part of every effective diet. Also at the main meals.MrM wrote:I am trying to eat things that are filling and low in calories

Heh. I've lost about 25 pounds in the last three weeks and none of my clothes are fitting right anymore. Did it the worst way, too. Had bloody diarrhea about three weeks back and ended up in the ER. Have been having trouble eating since. Any little bit of fiber or spice and I end up having diarrhea again and have to go back to clear juice and crackers.
For a foodie, this is near torture.
I needed to lose some weight, but this is unpleasant and ridiculous.

Get better soon Duchess. It sounds like a very bad round you are having there.
Hami: Ah, thanks. Have you read the German translation? Does TC actually say "Höllenfeuer"?
Just curious. I love languages.
I never read the Danish translation though. Only LFB and TIW have been translated to Danish anyway ;(

bit off topic..
I first triedt o read the OV..but put it away..then years later i found the german translation
yes i like it..much better than LOTR (there are passages when Sam calls Frodo "Chief" instead of Mr. Frodo
)
and yes he says "Höllenfeuer" other things have quiet funny names..e.g "Peechwife" ist called (backtranslated) Peechnose and so on..
back to diet...i would have liked to eat some chocolate this evening but i did not , just because i wrote here i would not...strange thing

I finally felt decent enough to go back to the gym today.....Ugh. Kids, start working out when you're young. A couple of weeks off when you're pushing 40 is like never having worked out before.
At least I'm still eating well and not smoking.
