James Cameron discusses 3d tech--Geek alert!

Cameron does make a compelling argument that 48 fps is the "magic" or optimal framerate for making movies look as good as they can, but that going faster than 48 fps would be pointless.
Doesn't take much to convince me, I'm all for it! So, never mind the 3D aspect of the debate, I'd be happy just to watch a movie in glorious 2D at 48 fps!
The talk of framerate reminded me that Doug Trumbull had tried to do something similar in the early '80s. I think this was just after he had made his feature film Brainstorm. I'm foggy about the details, but I think he had developed a projection system for running film at a super fast rate. It may have been 60 fps or higher. However, Trumbull ended up abandoning his pet project. I don't remember the reason, but it probably had something to do with what Cameron mentioned: the prohibitive cost of film stock when you're using it up at 60+ fps.

Yeah, that's exactly what it was. We played around with frame rate when I was in school, and it was shocking how much quicker we went through film (but man did it look good).

More about frame rate.
