Vinyl Setup

Post by balon! »

So I have a bunch of old vinyls that I want to listen to again, but I was born and raised in the era of CD's/MP3's. I am the owner of a GREAT record player (according to my older brother who is a muci nut) but I am at a lack of what else I need to set it up.

Speakers, I assume, but I heard someone mention an Amp also?

Help me Old School Watchers!

First, make sure the turn table has a good needle in it.
Nothing damaged my lp's and 45's quicker than cheap needles.

An amp or a receiver to power the speakers.

Cables and speaker wire, of course.

And the speakers themselves. For a basic system, that should do it.

You might want to add an equilizer, but it's not essential.

Sounds good. I've got some new needleds to replace the old one, and some crappy speakers I can use for now. All I need now is an amp.

Is it specific for a vinyl player? Where could I find a cheap one?

nah.

As long as it has an in source for the turntable and out source for the speakers you'll be good to go.

I betcha you'll find inexpensive ones at Radio Shack.

This is why hifi separates are so great. You get great sound quality and as long as you've got a decent amp you can add pretty much whatever other devices you want. I've just got a Cambridge Audio amp and CD deck with a little turntable plugged into it, but I've thought about getting a radio, digital radio, mini disc deck and even a CD recorder (back when so many CDs had nasty copy protection on them) for it.

I also figured out that my SCART switch could be plugged into the auxiliary input of the amp, so my TV, DVD player and Xbox all play their sound through the system as well.
Q. Why do Communists drink herbal tea?
A. Because proper tea is theft.
