SNL: Christopher Walken

Post by A Gunslinger »

Did anyone see Chistopher Walken this last Sat? He was f'n GREAT!

This was his 7th stint as guest host, and man did he deliver the goods.

While he didn't do another installment of "The Continental" or do another "More Cowbell" skit (one of the top 5 skits on SNL ever!), he had the best series of skits all year.

The opening monologue was classic. He had wanted the audience to ask him questions. The twist was, that HE HIMSLEF wrote them. The question..."which would you prefer as a power: invisibility or flight? Was classic.

He also playeda HS drama teacher who deemed "Greased Lightning" too racy.

He did a skit where he was a botanist who was afraid of his plants, and in order to feel more comfy, would paste "Googily Eyes" (plastic teddy bear eyes) on ALL of them.

The Walken family reuinion was OK too!

Anyone else se it?

I'm in the silent minority on Walken, as I think he is NOT FUNNY. When I saw that he was this week's host, I skipped to Weekend Update (which also wasn't funny this week.)

Y'know, I saw it, and I found it somewhat amusing, but I think I am quickly becoming like dlbpharmd. I don't find him unfunny, but I think he is becoming such a self-parody that I am having trouble finding the funny anymore. But he could still win me back, particularly if he moves back to the type of acting he started with, by playing up the scary instead of the funny. That's what made him so funny to me in the first place....he was so frickin' scary for so long. Now, with things like Balls of Furry (misspelled on purpose), I'm finding him harder to love.

I have a little more respect (maybe charity) for Walken. He is one of those actors that love the CRAFT. If you think he has lost his chops...check this out:

He's feeling somethin' as he's jiggin, dancin' and flyin' around in his distant and icy walken-ness. The Walken can do it all, and loves it all. He's kinda like Michael Caine... there are very few scripts that don't have somethin' in it to intrest him.

He is one of those people that could read the phone book and get a laugh out of it.

I used to feel that way.
But over the years he's been growing on me.
I used to think that the "The Continental" skit was the dumb now I like it.

yah, I can understand how someone might see him as becoming a self-parody... however, I can't help it when I see him on screen, just forgetting everything else and seeing this imposing actor...

And still, he COULD read a phonebook and make it funny ...
WT--?!

I'm a fan of Walken, but I'm not a fan of SNL. I sort of drifted away from the show a few years ago--it mostly didn't make me laugh. Odd thing though is that I disliked Tina Fey on SNL, but I really like 30 Rock.

I read somewhere that Walken is one of a few people who have an open invitation to host SNL anytime.
