Well its been a couple of years since I created this thread and after all that time and all those hours playing deathmatch games I still can't stand the "cheap kill". However I've dabbled in some crossbow/sniper rifle action lately. Shame on me.

For me its the mid-range and close quarters stuff I end up enjoying the most. And that would be Machine Gun/Rocket launcher - Shotgun/crowbar respectively. When I used to play Unreal Tournament I liked the sniper rifle mainly because you got that booming "Head Shot!" as a reward.Reave the Unjust wrote:Good thread!
I'm all for face to face close quarters combat, but also like that sneaky shot from a mile away.
It's the mid-range stuff that feels odd to me.

I don't like sniping because it's annoying to be picked off from a mile away without any warning, but I accept that there's an element of skill involved. I'd like it a lot more if I could do it, but I'm a notoriously poor sniper.
Camping on the other hand, ugh, the cheapest of the cheap. There's an awful lot of it in Call of Duty 4 and I think it actually detracts from the overall experience. You're supposed to be fighting for superiority in an urban environment, hiding behind some boxes until someone happens by is not in keeping with the spirit of the game and it won't even get you that many kills.

Q. Why do Communists drink herbal tea?
A. Because proper tea is theft.

I'm still a fan of WWII shooters, when it comes to sniping. Most futuristic games don't "feel" like weapons, but the bolt-action on a Springfield 1903--the time it takes to reload, the juicy, authentic sounds--makes you feel like you're holding something.

I don't really play multiplayer online games, so I've only had a small experience with this type of thing. But I sure enjoy it while playing one player. No One Lives Forever was a true favorite of mine with this, as it was such a joy to sit and listen to the silly conversations two guards would be having, and then at the end, squeeze off a round into someone's skull. Terribly satisfying.

I agree that "camping" is bad.
Whenever I'm sniping I change vantage points regularly so no-one gets a bead on me.
Plus, it's funny watching them run about shooting at a where I was 5 minutes ago!
I used to play lots of sneaking games like Tenchu and Metal Gear Solid, which contain sort of the close up version of sniping I suppose.
i.e. Wait for ages for your chance, but if you miss you're in trouble!
