Post by Xar »

According to SSH, Marvel Studios released their updated movie slate today. It includes:

Iron Man 2 (April 30, 2010)
Thor (June 4, 2010)
Captain America (2011)
The Avengers (about two months after Cap's release, 2011)

I really hope Thor and Captain America are as successful as Iron man. If so the Avengers movie will be sick!
I can't wait. :-)

They're going to need Del Toro, if they're going to have a hope of making Thor any good, though.

Thor's director has already been announced some time ago... it's Matthew Vaughn, the guy who made Stardust. In an interview he said that he wanted to set the first movie in Asgard rather than Midgard, although there was speculation about Don Blake for a time, so it's unclear whether he meant to have the whole movie set in Asgard, or only the largest part of it. Obviously, if they go for The Avengers, they'll need to establish Thor's mortal identity before that movie kicks off...

Thor!!!

The one comic series I did read for a short time as a kid. Until Fist told me, I had no idea he was part of The Avengers.

Update: SSH mentions that, during today's interview, David Maisel of Marvel Studios said that Iron Man 2 will possibly be used to introduce Thor as well (!).

Right now, all four characters (Iron Man, Hulk, Thor and Captain America) whose movies Marvel has produced/will produce have been Avengers. An Ant-Man movie is in development, but they have no release date set, and I think Marvel Studios only have the means to launch about two movies per year (skipping 2009 due to the writer's guild strike).

Even so, Marvel will have to spend a lot to bring all those actors together for The Avengers - considering that two of them will be Robert Downey Jr and Edward Norton, if the Hulk is brought in too. And including Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury as well, of course.

Chances are, the Avengers roster will be made out of those four characters (or three, if the Hulk is not used, which is unlikely), and they might simply round up the formation with minor superheroes who were in the Avengers at one time, but did not get/do not warrant movies of their own.

I think once the characters are successfully established to the mainstream audience any need to bring back the big name actors for an Avengers movie goes away.

I'm not so sure. For example, almost everyone who saw Iron Man agrees that RDJ is Tony Stark; if you had an Avengers movie in which Tony Stark was played by somebody else, I think many fans would be disappointed. With something as ambitious as The Avengers, I think Marvel will want to make very sure the movie is as good as it can be, and replacing actors isn't a good marketing move, especially if they continue the solo franchises at the same time.

Incidentally, according to Favreau (Iron Man's director), he spoke with Marvel about directing The Avengers some time ago, and he said that Marvel was adamant that it should be done with the actors of the solo franchises, or not at all.

but actors grow old, lose interest, die, etc. i think establishing the franchises with good movies should be priority.

What, they can't find an actor who knows how to play a doctor with a limp?

I'd like to see a 3-D ban, as in 'anybody who mentions that idiotic comic book character again will automatically get a 3 day ban".

Secret Invasion
According to preview blurbs, the 3-D Man is due to play an important role in Marvel's 2008 Summer event Secret Invasion. He is described as becoming Earth's number one Skrull hunter, which, given that no-one else seems able to detect the Skrull sleeper-agents imitating Earth's superheroes, would mean that he alone can tell which of them have been replaced by Skrull duplicates. Solicitations for Avengers: The Initiative #15 suggest he will be joined by the Skrull Kill Krew.

For my money, the deepest Marvel superhero. He's a duck, and his face is human-like. It says volumes about us.
