Top 10 Pre-Death Monologues in Film

Post by Cail »

Cool list.

I love the inclusion of Deep Blue Sea. I would have liked to have seen D-Fens's monologue from Falling Down as well.

I almost didn't rent Deep Blue Sea. Something on the box said "watch out, this could be crap" but for some reason I ignored it and watched it anyway. Though I found the overuse of CG sharks REALLY annoying, the final scene with Sam Jackson is priceless and therefore well worth the investment of my time and money.

Yeah, the CGI blew, but easily one of my favorite death scenes.

Haha, I watched Deep Blue Sea, and the ONLY thing I remember about it (besides that it sucked), was SLJ's death scene. Best death ever.

Hate to be pedant (well, actually, don't mind being a pedant, but I digress) but Kevin Spacey's monologue in American Beauty is hardly pre-death. He's already dead at that point.

This scene from Miller's Crossing should not only be on the list, but #1 or #2!

[Tom holds Bernie at gunpoint, and walks him out deeper into the forest]
Bernie: Tommy, you can't do this! You don't bump guys! You're not like those animals back there. It's not right, Tom! They can't make us do this. It's the wrong situation, they can't make us different people than we are. We're not muscle, Tom. I... I... I... never killed anybody. I used a little information for a chisel, that's all. It's my nature, Tom! I... I... I... can't help it, somebody gives me an angle, I play it. I don't deserve to die for that. Do you think I do?
[Tom doesn't answer, he just keeps walking]
Bernie: I'm... I'm... I'm just a grifter, Tom. I'm... I'm... I'm... I'm... I'm an nobody! But I'll tell you what, I never crossed a friend, Tom. I never killed anybody, I never crossed a friend, nor you, I'll bet. We're not like those animals! This is not us! Th... th... this is some hop dream! It's a dream, Tommy! I'm praying to you! I can't die! I can't die... out here in the woods, like a dumb animal! In the woods, LIKE A DUMB ANIMAL! Like a dumb animal! I can't... I can't... I CAN'T DIE OUT HERE IN THE WOODS!... like a dumb animal. I can't... die!
[Bernie falls to his knees, praying]
Bernie: I'm praying to you! Look in your heart! I'm praying to you! Look in your heart! I'm praying to you! Look in your heart! I'm praying to you! Look in your heart...
[Tom slowly aims his gun at Bernie]
Bernie: I'm praying to you! Look in your heart. I'm praying to you... look in your heart... look in your heart! You can't kill me... look in your heart.

Good one Danlo.

Don't know if it counts, but the banter between Doc and Johnny in Tombstone before Doc kills him is spectacular too.

Yes, very cool one!
Spoiler
But it is not quite a death scene, is it?
Tied to that one is the later one that happens near the end of the movie and ends with:
TOM: What heart? [fires gun]
....

What about Krull? The only thing I remember about that movie is EVERYONE had something to say before they died.

I haven't seen it in years though.
