What's the most unsettling part of the Chronicles?

Good call on The Banefire. That was seriously f*@ed up.

The description of Covenant walking in circles in the snow, grinding the bones of his broken ankle makes me physically nauseous every time.
And Elena hitting on TC is fairly unsettling too.

Knowing that the rape occurred in the beginning of the book stopped me from reading the book for long time.

I would have to say Atirians fall into despair disturbed me more than anything else in any of the stories. Torn between the Oath of Peace , and the need for justified vengeance. The only course of action left to her was to destroy herself in the attempt to retrieve Covenant, and bring him to justice.

Thing that I see a lot of here, and it surprises me, is Joan leaving Covenant.
Who wouldn't?
The divorce, I think, was the unkind cut, but the only reason I know anything scientific about leprosy is because of these books.
I think the repercussions of her guilt are obvious.

I pity Joan, she fell victim to personal paradox, we know she deserted Covenant when he needed her most, but what choice did she have. Her intent wasnt selfish, she was trying to save the life of her son. She lost her mind in the attempt, and minds dont regenerate either. Her very brief moments of clarity worry me though, and make me wonder if at some point she will have to face her paradox again, and make a choice between her son ,and his father.

Many people wouldn't. The fact is, leprosy is not very contagious at all.SGuilfoyle1966 wrote:Thing that I see a lot of here, and it surprises me, is Joan leaving Covenant.

The CDC has lots of information on leprosy, now called Hansen's disease, including the following:
However, persons receiving antibiotic treatment or having completed treatment are considered free of active infection.
Any possibly contagious contact the TC might have had with Joan and Roger had already taken place before he was diagnosed. Once he was treated and on medication, he would no longer have been a danger to those around him.Risk Groups: Close contacts with patients with untreated, active, predominantly multibacillary disease, and persons living in countries with highly endemic disease. [Emphasis added]

Maybe I'm too harsh on Joan, she got punished. All are punished. But still.

Linden's father's suicide really bothered me. I can't imagine anyone being so cruel to commit suicide in front of their 8-year-old daughter and then blame her for it.

That and when Linden killed her mother. Those two events is enought to make a person insane.GothicGypsy wrote:Linden's father's suicide really bothered me. I can't imagine anyone being so cruel to commit suicide in front of their 8-year-old daughter and then blame her for it.
Always wondered how Linden got away from being caught?
<Conjecture only>
Spoiler
We find a team of doctors discussing the last attempted medication used on one Linden Avery. The treatment caused a month long coma with an extreme amount of brain actitivity. The doctors decide not to use this teatment again on any patient while housed in the hostipal for the criminally insane.

Yea, I've kinda wondered that too. I guess she was able to suffocate her mom quickly enough that by the time it showed up on the nurse's monitors, Linden was able to hide the kleenex and look appropriate sad.Ur Dead wrote:Always wondered how Linden got away from being caught?

They later found another very similar case in the medical journals, which happened to occur in this very same town, about 10 years ago. It was forgotten about because it had happened to some leper...

Linden herself said that no one at the hospital came to check on her mother more than they had to, they didn't really care about her (she was "a fat whiner") and that they were basically just waiting for her to die. The fact that her mother died the way the doctors were expecting her to (i.e. suffocation) it never would've entered their minds that she was forcibly suffocated.Ur Dead wrote: Always wondered how Linden got away from being caught?

I can't remember if I posted in this one or not. I'm re-reading the books again and a lot of things are disturbing. The murder of Sparlimb Keelsetter by his own son in Coercri is one thing that just tears my heart out. Mhoram's hands becoming maimed while stabbing the Krill into the Raver's Giant-form, and holding on to make sure he got the job done, in the war on the fields at Revelstone. Seadreamer's anguished yell in the cavern of the One Tree, and his subsequent death, was one of the most horrific moments in all the series. Linden's attempt on Ceer's life (was it Ceer or Cail??? I forget) was dude, just messed up. The discontinuation of the Haruchai's vow was like a cord snapping in two; just dreadfully sad. The rape of Lena was a little disturbing, but it was understandable in light of TC's impotence and lack of feeling heretofore. Atiaran's suicide during her attempt to bring TC back to save the Land. Trell's damage of the Close. Troy's changing into a Forestal. Honninscrave's struggles to contain the Raver so it could be destroyed, therefore submitting to his own death. It was pretty much a suicide. And Nom being the one who killed him and absorbing the Raver. Wow. The Ranyhyn, especially the near-dead ones, rearing to TC. The promise that kept them in the Land so they could not escape. The Haruchai as Ravers. "Elena Foul-Wife" One of the creepiest phrases ever put to pen. Clave's attempted genocide of the Haruchai for misguided purposes. The lie that was perpetrated to enact the "justified" shedding of blood of the Land's inhabitants. I could write a book containing nothing but the shocks SRD has given me in the TC books. He is a bona fide genius.
Heard my ears aright? Did not the gaddhi grant me this glaive?
