how could they lose?

IMO the origin of Doomsday is one of the most clever origins of any character in comics. The travesty about Doomsday is the overuse and misuse of his character. Superman/Orion couldn't beat him, but 2 Supermen did(in Infinite Crisis) only to have tremendous difficulty with 1 Superboy. I'm with Matrixman, the inconsistencies of comics drive me insane.

Pretty much all his regular powers (Omega Beams, super strength, immortality, etc.), as well as some little goodies from Brainiac. After Superman beats the absolute crap out of him, Darkseid whips out some sort of "pain net" which exerts pain on every pressure point in Superman's body, times a thousand or something. Heh. He only loses because Luthor gained access to the anti-life equation.
