The people of the Land are not allowed to be who they are. How can they be true to themselves if they cannot be themselves, or even know who they really are? And if they cannot be true, how can they defend the Land or do anything of significance or even live a fulfilling life?
Meh?!? Are you saying we can't live fulfilling lives??

I like that analogy of grandparents bond to grand children. Consider the original Viles, with their caverns of majestic castles and beauty in comparison to their " offspring ". Perhaps a analogy there in the time progression of the Vile evolution.? I suspect, before this series is over,,the Caverns of the original Viles will be revisited. The little interface Linden had with the Viles was just a tease as far as " magic" goes.
Its interesting that the " magic" is also in entities like Esmer and the Insequent. Their abilities are of more import in this story than the Land. Basically the Land is still there just not always ,,," visible" due to Kevins Dirt.
I do think that there is a thought about the innocent wide open mind of the young, where anything is possible, everything is wonderment, and the Imagination is freely accessed. And yes, a thematic exploration is under way of regaining that " free access", because that is where Linden will find the answer to, " Who Am I".
If she withdrew from exaltation, she would be forced to think- And every thought led to fear and contradictions; to dilemmas for which she was unprepared.

Yes, but the Masters are simply trying to prevent people from driving without their seatbelts on !

You can be happily riding your bicycle and get squished flat as a pancake by some horrible great monstertruck...
Even when the magic was there for all to share, the ordinary people of the Land had enough on their plate. Ravers, loony Cavewights, Lords breaking the Law of Death every five minutes, suns of pestilence, feeding the Sunbane...the Haruchai won't even trust using weapons, relying on their own skills, so we can hardly blame them for mistrusting the uses and abuses of externalised power can we?
