Sex and the City

Post by Fist and Faith »

Not sure if I'm the only guy who loves the show. Anyway, the movie was very good. More than just a long episode shown at the theater, it had the feel of a movie. And it had all of the stuff that made the show great. All four were just as they should have been, as we've known them to be, yet they all had huge events and/or realizations. And I'll definitely see it again when it's on dvd.

I'm a big fan of the show, but I completely disagree with Fist's review. This movie was 2.5 hours of pure crap, with almost no humor and none of the witty, snappy dialogue that made the series so spectacular.

The reviews I've read lean more towards dlb's opinion that Fists. But to each his own! I've enjoyed some pretty crappy movies.

Most probably don't know how seldom dlb and I agree on books and movies. As is usually the case, my jaw just dropped. I laughed out loud a few times. This is just one more example of me being right and him being wrong.

I liked the series because it was banal, and if the movie even tries to approach genuine feeling, then I'm just not going.

I'm not a fan of the show, I haven't seen the movie. I just have one comment: who in their right mind would go see a movie which is being marketed with a trailer that includes middle-aged women talking about not waxing their bikini area for months?

I mean, if you like the show, fine. I've seen a few episodes and it's not bad. If you like the movie, fine. I've not seen it. But what marketing genius decided that this little scene from the movie best met the expectations of its target audience? Middle-aged women spilling out of their swimsuits??? And as if the image wasn't bad enough, this is the subject of their dialogue. Dialogue that we're not only expected to enjoy, but dialogue the marketing guys thought would build excitement for the movie. W. T. F.

Honestly, all it did was make me feel slightly nauseated. Maybe I'm not the target audience ( ), but in my opinion you couldn't have made a worst trailer if you strung together 5 tampon commercials and slapped on a movie-announcer guy's narration of the trials of impending menopause.

I'm not saying that these issues can't be used as the subject of good drama. But I have a feeling that hairy women isn't a dramatic character arc, but just one of many crass, shock-value moments meant to simultaneously offend and titillate.

Like I said, this is not my kind of movie.

That's a good example of what I like about both the show and movie. You can't help but notice it, but most of us politely ignore it. But Samantha just up and says everything we're all thinking. She kills me!

Hey, we agree more often that you're letting on! So I wasn't crazy about Watchmen and I hated SATC. I can't help it that every now and then you lose all sense of what is good.

(BTW - I just bought Batman: Year One, here's your chance to redeem yourself.)

Good luck with Batman. :D (And read Watchmen again, including the backup stories. Heh.) But let's not forget Gates of Fire. I was gonna say Gardens of the Moon too, but you haven't tried that, iirc?

Oh yeah, I forgot about GoF, and I haven't tried Garden yet.

I guess I don't relate to that because I have no problem saying what I'm thinking. I'm definitely not one of the "politely ignoring" types. So there is no sense of liberation for me in watching women talk about how gross they are.

I like the show a fair amount. I thought the movie was an awful, glorified chick flick.

Also, dlb, Year One changed my comic-book life. Just saying.

I ended up watching the show quite a bit (mostly as part of a deal with my wife whereby I got her to watch Babylon 5...) and I really ended up liking the show.

I was worried, going into the movie, that it'd feel like a tacked-on epilogue for the show. And the first 45 minutes or so really felt that way. It was pleasant to revisit "old friends" and all, but nothing gripping. The movie got better as it went, but I don't think it was ever as good as some of the better episodes of the show.

Oh and the extended fashion-show type segements...... horrible, just horrible.....

Yeah, I'm guilty of watching a few episodes with my wife, too. The TV show definitely had some witty writing. I liked its irreverent humor. My comments in this thread aren't directed to anyone, or the show . . . just that one dumb marketing move in the trailer.

I've watched it a few times. Basically, I find it comforting as it feels like sitting around with my mom and sisters. The voices on the show are less shrill too.

Heh. I never watched the show but when my wife heard that SATC out performed Indiana Jones last weekend she was like "How did that 2 1/2 hour Cluck Fest beat out Indy?" My wife likes Pro Football, Star Trek and watches Ninja Warrior on G4. Definitely not a fan of "chick flicks". Who am I to argue with a woman who knows what she likes. :-)

I think she actually used the term "Quack Fest" but I knew what she meant.

I would just like to clarify that I wasn't an avid watcher. I've seen enough episodes to know pretty much what's going on. I live in a male dominated home. I see WAY WAY WAY more guy flix than I do chic anything.
