The Stages of Death

Post by Nom vs. Vain »

It struck me earlier this week that in both the first and second chronicles Covenant seemed to follow the stages death from Lord Foul's Bane to The Power that Preserves and from The Wounded Land to White Gold Wielder. It now seems as though Linden is following her own stages of death in The Final Chronicles. Does anyone else see this? Has this been discussed yet?

For those of you who don't want to google what the stages of death are these are the commonly accepted stages of death or loss in psychology:

1. Denial
2. Anger
3. Bargaining
4. Depression
5. Acceptance

Although I think Mr. D adds an alternate stage of death or loss in desperation instead of acceptance. This appears to be very true in real life as well with many people going a separate path and finding despair rather than acceptance.
These are the pale deaths
which men miscall their lives:
for all the scents of green things growing,
each breath is but an exhalation of the grave.
Boddies jerk like puppet corpses,
and hell walks laughing---

Interesting points, but can we take the analysis one step farther?

It seems to me that there is a corresponding change in the characters "Power" through this transition.

In the early stages of denial, they hurt and harm everyone and everything around them. The rape of Lena is the obvious example.

During the bargaining stages, as they try to find their place and their peace in the drama, they try to use their power for good and fail.

And it's not until they reach the end of their rope, in either acceptance or resignment, that they actually accomplish anything of lasting good.

These stages of yours, are not just the stages of death. They are also well known as the stages of grief. I learned all about them during an unasked for divorce.

Aren't we in the wrong forum to discuss the Final Chrons? I don't think I can say what I want to say in this one. I'd better shut up............... :)
Heard my ears aright? Did not the gaddhi grant me this glaive?

Good topic. But good point about the location. I'll move this to the Runes forum. Would that be appropriate?

I just saw this and assumed (wrongly) that it was a thread about the stages of death in the land, ie when is someone actually dead?

We have the the living and then various stages of death from completely killed off (can't think of anyone this would account for) to the ghosts and then the various states of Foul and Ravers who seem to be killed (or rent)but don't actually die and of course TC who is dead (or not).

What's a guy got to do to snuff it in the land?
"Winston, if you were my husband I'd give you poison" ................ "Madam, if you were my wife I would drink it!"

The stages of death:

1. "I want to SING!"

2. "But I'm not dead yet!"

3. "Your friend here is only mostly dead!"

4. "He's dead."
"I want to speak to him immediately!"
"You can't, he was shot."
"Was it fatal?"
"Yes."
"How fatal?"
"Completely!"
"Ah!"

(I remember way too many movie quotes, it seems!)
"You make me think Hell is run like a corporation."
"It's the other way around, but yes."
