20 best "that guys" of all time
Yep, I'm dipping into the Cracked well again. The usual language disclaimers apply.
#1 is dead, spot on.

Definitely agree with the number one, there was at least a year or two where it seemed like Cromwell was in every movie I saw.
I don't think Stormare belongs though. He is too delightful and recognizable. I always think he stands out.
I also a pretty big fan of JK Simmons (JUNO!) and Dylan Baker. (Weird they didn't mention his brutal performance in Happiness and his cameo in Requiem for a Dream.)
By the way, is there a "that chick" list?

I was a big fan of JT Walsh. Were he still alive, I think he'd be tops.

Peter Stormare is my favorite guy on the list. I've seen only four movies featuring him, but he was memorable in every one (Armageddon, Fargo, Minority Report, Constantine).
(No, sex crimes aren't funny, but...)

...just generally giving off the impression that he' committed a couple of sex crimes lately.

Bloody hell, yes!...instilling an intense fear of wood-chippers in you in Fargo.

I had the misfortune of watching a bit of Silence of the Lambs recently (yes, I think the film is tremendously overrated and dated), but I was struck with how insanely good Ted Levine's performance was. Then I started thinking about all the great stuff he's done, and I realized that he should be on this list.

Good call. I especially liked him in Heat and From the Earth to the Moon.Cail wrote:I had the misfortune of watching a bit of Silence of the Lambs recently (yes, I think the film is tremendously overrated and dated), but I was struck with how insanely good Ted Levine's performance was. Disagree about Silence though.

Kind of ironic that the number one 'That Guy' is an Oscar winner, but a great list nontheless. The Cromwell was the only decent thing in 24 season 6.
Totally agree with the first comment about John C. McGinley, he was in everything before Scrubs.

First guy I think of when I think of "That Guy" is Adam Goldberg, so I was disappointed not to see him.
Also, one of them was likened to "a poor man's Jon Favreau", when I think Jon Favreau should be on this list

Does anybody remember Cromwell playing Stretch Cunningham in All in the Family? I think he reminds me of Donald Sutherland, both in appearance, voice texture, and virally infecting all known media.
Also: would John Cazale be a "that guy"? I don't know how famous he was in the 70s, but I do know he was an amazing character actor (he starred in Godfather I, II, The Conversation, and The Deer Hunter). He didn't dominate those films, but I also couldn't imagine them without his presence.

A couple of years ago, I watched a documentary about American cinema in the seventies. Alongside actors like Sutherland, Pacino, Brando etc, they spared a few minutes on Cazale. I think that indicates he was verging on becoming very well known before his untimely death. My favourite role for Cazale was in Dog Day Afternoon, as the shy bank robber.
