Fast Food on a Diet

Post by DukkhaWaynhim »

DW here, recognizing that in today's hustly-bustly world, it is exceedingly difficult to avoid stopping at a fast food joint for a quick fix. The question is, how to do this without bankrupting your diet? I think there are many of us that manage to visit FF restaurants, probably more often than we ought to, but still manage to survive our foray into the land of sugar and grease. So let's share our FF choices here, for the benefit of others that maybe avoid some restaurants unfairly, or who don't have the time to research the minutiae of the FF nutrition facts, assuming they can even be found.

For example, I have found that a satisfying trip to Wendy's can be made, by ordering their Chili - no crackers, add hot sauce. It is low in fat, and higher in fiber per calorie than nearly anything else on their menu. Couple that with one of their new chicken go-wraps (substitute mustard for the sauce they add), and you have a 400-500 calorie meal that is filling without bloating or bankrupting you.

Anyone else?

Subway. 6" subs, no dressing, no cheese, whole wheat bread.

Another vote for Subway. Mustard's okay, tho, and have them pile on the veggies. The veggie patties aren't bad as a meat substitute.

Quizno's Sammies are not too bad, calorie-wise.

I have a friend who gets the chili and a plain baked potato at Wendy's, then tops the potato with the chili.

There's one McDonald's salad -- can't remember which one -- where the salad dressing is redundant, as the chicken is cooked in some sort of sauce/glaze/thingum and flavors the whole salad nicely on its own.

It might be helpful to specify what plan one is following when suggestions are posted.

Okey doke. I'm doing the Weight Watchers Core Plan -- so, low fat, whole grains, all fruits/veggies, etc. All condiments are okay. But I'm also watching sodium intake.

Hardee's Low Carb burger is the best taste/calorie ratio. You get a great big burger that is absolutely delicious. Without the bun, you actually get a stronger beef taste. And it's only 420 calories, less if you leave off the cheese. With a Diet Coke, that's a damn good meal!

I'm following a modified Atkins - no induction, just overall low carbs, which if I manage to pull it off restricts calories to about 1300-1500 per day.

McDonalds - Dbl-Cheeseburger from the value menu, no bun. Side Salad with Regular Ranch Dressing, and Diet Coke.

Subway - like Cail sez. Just avoid the cheese, avoid the mayo - and [handslap!] don't get the meatball or steak subs.

Hardees - like Malik sez. Eating a hamburger with condiments wrapped only in lettuce takes a bit of coordination, but it is possible, as long as the prep guy doesn't totally wreck it.

Burger King - I usually drive on by - I haven't found anything worthwhile on the menu. Their side salad is usually pretty gray, and I just don't like the taste of their burgers.

Keep the good ideas a flowin', everyone!
