Giving the Ring Away

Post by Romeo »

I'm trying to remember all the times (in the First Chronicles) that Covenant offered his ring to someone else. Here's the list I have so far, but I think I may have missed at least one other time when he offered it to Mhoram:

1. The Beggar

2. Foamfollower (Covenant asked him if he wanted his ring during the boat ride to Revelstone)

3. Mhoram (Covenent took off the ring and tried to throw it to him just before the calling of the Fire Lions)

4. Corimini, Eldest of the Loresraat (Covenant handed it to him when they first arrived, and said, "find some way to save the Land without me.")

5. Hile Troy (on Gallows Howe)

Can anyone else think of other instances?
And then the ravens pecked out his eyes.

Wow, good question. I guess I never really gave much thought to keeping track of that, but it is very significant. Didn't he try to give it to Linden once and she wanted to take it, but didn't? On board Starfare's Gem is where I am thinking. HE told her she had more right to it than he did because she had healed someone with it and didn't even have it in her hand. I could be wrong; it has been a few weeks since I read the 2nd Chronicles. I'm due to begin at the 1st Chrons again soon.
Heard my ears aright? Did not the gaddhi grant me this glaive?

Okay - here's another one. What color is diamondraught? I thought it was clear, but I couldn't find any reference to any color at all.

He also tried to give it to Linden just before the Ravers attacked under Mount Thunder at the end of WGW.

Romeo, I'd agree - I think diamondraught is clear. But I don't think there's ever a description of it's color. My impression stems from the word "diamond" in the name.

Hmmm, with my aging memory I thought both Diamondraught and Springwine were both clear (unlike me  ). I also thought it was explicity stated as such for at least one of them. Well, I am getting ready for another readthrough from the beginning so I will keep an eye out.

I'm thinking that Covenant was trying to throw the ring over Landsdrop, not towards Mhoram.

Romeo specifically said "in the first Chronicles" so the instance with Linden at the end of WGW doesn't count.

Shoot, then my statement about Linden doesn't count either 'cause she showed up in 2nd Chrons, not 1st. Then I don't know. I guess they are all covered. All the inebriating (spelling?) drinks are clear, at least that's what my imagination is telling me. But when the mixture of pitchbrew came into being, I couldn't help but picture it as a black liquid. Because of vitrim, I guess. It was a mixture of vitrim and diamondraught, was it not? And didn't they say vitrim was black? Jeez, I need to read it all again. Lucky for me that's a good thing. :P

5. Hile Troy (on Gallows Howe)
didn't Hile take the ring, rather than TC giving it to him? I dont have my books, I am on the road...

1. The Beggar.

2. Foamfollower (on the boat ride to Revelstone)
With a jerk of his head, he knocked transitions aside and asked roughly, “do you want my ring?”

“Want?” Foamfollower croaked, looking as if he felt he should laugh but did not have the heart for it. “Want?” His voice quavered painfully, as if he were confessing to some kind of aberration. “Do not use such a word, my friend. Wanting is natural, and my succeed or fail without wrong. Say covet, rather. To covet is to desire something which should not be given. Yes, I covet your un-Earth, wild magic, peace-ending white gold.

There is wild magic graven in every rock,
Contained for white gold to unleash or control—

I admit the desire. But do not tempt me. Power has a way of revenging itself upon its usurpers. I would not accept the ring of you offered it to me.”
3. Mhoram (just before the calling of the Fire Lions)
The peril in Mhoram’s eyes did not waver. “No, Unbeliever. You need not lose your mind. There are other answers – other songs. You can find them. Why should the Land be destroyed for your pain? Save or damn! Grasp the Staff!”

“Damnation!” Fumbling furiously for his ring, Covenant shouted, “Do it yourself!” He wrenched the band from his finger and tried to throw it at Mhoram. But he was shaking madly; his fingers slipped. The ring dropped to the stone, rolled away.
4. Corimini (when the group arrived at Revelwood)
… “I am Corimini,” he said, “the Eldest of the Loresraat. I speak for all the seekers of the Lore, both Sword and Staff. The accepting of a gift returns the honor to the giver. Be welcome.” As he spoke, he held out his hand to help Covenant dismount.

But Covenant either misunderstood the gesture or went beyond it intuitively. Instead of swinging off his mount, he brusquely pulled his wedding band from his left hand and dropped it into Corimini’s extended palm.
.
.
.
“I don’t need service,” Covenant replied bluntly. “I need an alternative. Find some way to save the Land without me.”
5. Hile Troy
He swung toward Covenant. “You!” he shouted stridently. “If you’re too much of a coward to do anything yourself, at least give me a chance to help her! Give me your ring!—I can feel it from here. Give it to me! Come on, you bastard. It’s her only chance.”
.
.
.
… A silent voice cried out to him, No! No! But he ignored it. With his halfhand, he fumbled at the ring. It seemed to resist him – he had trouble gripping it – but as he reached Troy he finally tore it from his finger. In a wet voice, as if his mouth were full of blood, he said, “Take it. Save her.” He put the band in Troy’s hand.
And then the ravens pecked out his eyes.

It says in Lord Foul's Bane - when TC is offered his first Springwine at Lena's house, that it is crystal clear like water.. More implying a lack of colour than specifically stating one.

I dont know why but I thought it was a light Amber color, I cant find any references to color either but Clear would make sense to me with the name Diamondraught, unless Diamond raught was their method of Curing it and like Jack Daniels being Coal raught hehe or cured ...and coal becoms diamonds...could the Giants have taken it a step further? it would be pretty expensive in our world to cure it like that but maybe Diamond cured whiskey?..... maybe im reaching.

I was thinking about Pitchwife and his pitchbrew and that would seem to have been a limited edition... unless the waynhim kept supplying him with Vitrim over the centuries? and they probably did considering
Spoiler
they stayed in the land for three years to rebuild the gates
:D

Still, i cant find any reference to color...and the GI is down it seems.

I'm glad there's support for "amber" out there. :-) The first time it's described, it's said to have a "light whiskey" flavor. Which suggests an amber color to me, too ... going back and reading that, anyway. Before that, I always thought it was clear. But I text-searched for "amber" and "clear" and "diamondraught" and "colorless" and some other similar words and couldn't find *any* color (or colour) associated with the drink. Silly detail to get hung up on, but hey - it's me. :-)

I never understood why SRD put him giving the ring away so many times...once would make the point, twice maybe within different books, but that many? I don't see the need for it.
