Vain was the Anti-Covenant
Assured, resolute, determined, one purpose, inviolate, no distractions, impervious to contradiction or aswayance, strong and impervious to normal harm ( rukhs hurt but no real damage).
Vain existed for a single purpose, he succeeded not by his own merit (though it's possible he might have) but by those imperfect fallible creatures whom he accompanied.
Covenant, like an irreconsilable drunk, staggered from one impropriety to another and should have died seventeen times in book one alone if not for the acts of others.
Yeah, Vain was a definite bonus, heh. But was he earthpower or was Findail that ingredient?

Vain was structure and rigidity, Findail was Earthpower to fill it and give it life.

Re: Vain was the Anti-Covenant
That is a good question. My understanding (which is not always good) is that Vain was created via lore whereas Findail as an Elohim was Earthpower incarnate. I guess lore can utilize Earthpower or potentially other powers. I am not sure if it is stated explicitly what "ingredients" went into Vain.Sharguild wrote:Yeah, Vain was a definite bonus, heh. Great question, and I'm with anamib on this one. Vain was the physical aspect, Findail was the spiritual (power) aspect. Findail is to Vain as gasoline is to engine. That's just my five cents (inflation).

Vain was pure structure, with no actions but those to serve his own purpose or the outcome of that purpose. TC operated on the same level up until the end..though TC was slightly more open to suggestion by those around him.
however...Vain for some reason was more than structure, he had the ability to kill from a distance, he did have power so he was more than just pure structure, he had enough power to complete one wish and possibly enough power had to be in him to bind the Elohim with himself or to withstand The elohims attempts to repel him. impervious to anything but that directed specifically at him, but he was able to withstand Findails attempts at ending him and no damage done, however when the Clave attacked him he was damaged. before he healed him Findail said "the earth must not suffer his (vain's) Pain," maybe thats why he tried to break contact rather than injure or maim.

Thanks RocksisterRocksister wrote:Dang, BH, that avatar is AWESOME!!!!!!!

when i have The First ready i will try to do something similar maybe a change of expression from the gladness of her new blade to a hardened surety of what she means to use it for.

BH, I think you have a pretty good handle on the First's attitude already. We discussed in another thread, although I don't remember which one, and you hit it right on the head. Yes, that excited twinkle in her eyes when she first held her new falchion, switching to that "come near me and die a quick, sharp death" look would be AWESOME! I'm really looking forward to seeing what you come up with. My avatar is not practical. I suppose practicality is not what I was aiming for when I posed for that picture. Ha ha, that was so far off base that even I am embarrassed.........

Never tried a boilermaker, but it sounds wicked. I have, however, downed some B-52's without knowing what the heck they were. I found out later when I couldn't stand up.
Hey, that's a good idea for a new thread, somebody. Names of drinks you can make with springwine, diamondraught, vitrim, and pitchbrew. Oh, and metheglin! Am I leaving one out? Seems like I am. Did springwine have aliantha in it? I can't recall. I'd love to see Vain get drunk........... I think he'd go for Linden..........

I'm pretty sure springwine did have aliantha in it, but I'm stuck on what pitchbrew is. All I can think of is the gloop Pitchwife uses to mend the Giantship, which wouldn't be terribly fun to drink. Although neither are some of the real-world alcoholic beverages I've tried...Rocksister wrote:Never tried a boilermaker, but it sounds wicked. Springwine did have Aliantha in it...or at least it was described as smelling of aliantha, and Pitchbrew was the drink Pitchwife made by Mixing Diamondraught and Vitrim together, Vitrim was the restorative drink made by Urviles and Waynhim.ff7hero wrote:I'm pretty sure springwine did have aliantha in it, but I'm stuck on what pitchbrew is. If you want to try something truly disgusting try Jagermeister. but that could just be me...and my extreme dislike of black licorice.

I have never had one either. I do remember them from back in my grade school days when my father would take our family out for nice Sunday afternoon trips to a bar. The folks there that drank them were not exactly following the approach of "let it breathe, sample the bouquet, swirl a small sip around on your taste buds..."Rocksister wrote:Never tried a boilermaker, but it sounds wicked.

Anyway, (sort of) back on topic...
Agreed! Hey, after all, he did pick her up in his arms and carry her off into the sunset. (Please, no "staff" jokes.Rocksister wrote:I'd love to see Vain get drunk........... I think he'd go for Linden..........

I have tried Jaegermeister (?sp?), but also did not like it. The gold swirls just seemed to be a novelty, and the taste was not that great. But now sit a bottle of Grand Marnier down in front of me and I'm happy. I just like snorting it.
Back to topic; maybe the Giants only had diamondraught because as a seafaring and coastal-dwelling folk, they had little access to fresh water. Just a thought. I know the Land had water. Glimmermere and Furl Falls, the Soulsease, Andelain's river...I think these were freshwater. But you are right, they do enjoy their drinking in the Land.
Ha ha, Vain....Staff....

That is a good point. I don't know how much less fresh water distilling a liquor requires compared to making beer/wine. Perhaps one of the subject matter experts from over in the Galley's beer and wine threads can shed some light.Rocksister wrote:Back to topic; maybe the Giants only had diamondraught because as a seafaring and coastal-dwelling folk, they had little access to fresh water.
I'll give them this one (despite the fact that my drinking days are behind me, LOL.)Rocksister wrote:they do enjoy their drinking in the Land.

I don't know a darn thing about distilling spirits, so I had no idea you used fresh water to do that. Perhaps diamondraught is a salt-water distilled variety? No idea. I just know that you don't hear much in the Chrons about people drinking water, except when on walking journeys and such, when they could not dip springwine out of streams and rivers. While I'm on the subject of water, remind me how Glimmermere is so powerful. Am I right in thinking that it originated from the roots of Skyweir, where the Earthblood is located, or do I need to start reading again???
