Lord Mhoram - so, then, this is all a dream to you
Thomas Covenant - no, more a nightmare
LM - and yet you assist, instead of awaiting an opportunity to awake
TC - gotta keep moving, stagnation will kill a leper faster than any cave-wight. Besides, I don't believe dying in a dream will truly kill you.
LM - Then all thy trials, all the grief you have suffered, this is to what end, sub-conscious temperance?
TC - possibly, more probably it's self-punishment though.
LM - punishment? for what?
TC - regret
LM - ah, my friend, and what do you regret?
TC - everything
LM - that, is a long list
TC - not really, in fact it's only two subjects, I regret being me and I regret not being someone else.
LM - so you wish to live but not be responsible for your life?
TC - it's not that simple, being responsible is easy, just blame yourself for everything. Doing something about it is the hard part. When I awoke in the land it would have been very simple to accept delusion and just accept whatever happens as fate. But fate is a liar, it tricks you into believing you have no say in what takes place. I know different. I know that my actions promote cause and effect. That what I decide will inevitably determine what happens.
LM - ah, the safety in dreams
TC exactly, and if I acknowledge that I am awake, that others have influence on the results, I lose control.
LM - so, one hand washes the other
TC - well, I'd give my left arm to be ambidexterous
LM - So tell me then, what will you do?
TC - I believe...
LM - yes?
TC - I believe I'll have another drink
LM - you drink too much
TC - yeah well, I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy, besides, it's your round.
