Ralph Fiennes is an inspired choice for Mhoram - by far one of the hardest characters to cast I'd have thought.

Cillian Murphy

Post by andrew »

If the movies go as far as the Last Chronicles, Cillian Murphy would make a superb Roger Covenant.

Might want to put that as a 3rd Chrons spoiler, but I'll leave that up to you and the moderator. Inspired choice! Great choice, actually! 8)

Who could Cillian Murphy play?

Thanks. Also think Eric Bana would make a good Bannor and Amanda Peet as Linden. She played Matt Damon's wife in Syriana and Paris in Identity.

Cillian Murphy could be Borillar, the young Hirebrand apprenticed to Tohrm. He is young and wide-eyed, and awed by Covenant at the start of Illearth War. But it's such a small part he might not want it.

I can't remember if Borillar goes on to play a larger part in the story later, maybe during Satansfist's siege of Revelstone...?

I'm slowly being won over to the idea that Hile Troy was black, though. I'm actually picturing Samuel Jackson as Troy now... he is very good at the accusatory tone that Troy often uses against Covenant, and I could picture him as a military man.

I know Hile Troy was only a theoritician, but he was chosen to physically lead the Warward. I could see Sam Jackson doin that.

When I picture Cillian Murphy acting aggressively I think of the excellent film Disco Pigs in which he starred - so I see him as a lone, troubled, but highly dangerous psycho rather than a stoic warrior-type.

But Troy is NOT a stoic warrior type, and he'd be very miscast if he were cast as a stoic warrior. He's a mental prodigy whose been crippled by blindness from birth and so was never proficient at anything physical except navigating. He attains the Warmark status by playing mental wargames but otherwise is a very below-average Sword student.

Furthermore, in order to be cast perfectly, it need to be someone that the audience would not willingly reside their trust in. He needs to be a bit "off". A bit cocky, a bit arrogant, a bit too gung-ho, and a bit out-of-his-league. He is the Math PhD General.

You know, you're right. Troy is basically a wargaming nerd of the most epic proportions... I think I might've been having a drink when I seriously started to picture Samuel L. Jackson in the role. :D

"You will know my name is Hile Troy, when I lay my Oath of Peace upon you!"

He does kill some of Foul's creatures personally by the sword, doesn't he? But is it more or less by luck or accident? I'd have to read the Doriendor Corishev battle again.

I just can't get it out of my head that the character might be black after reading it here on the forum for the first time - it somehow makes sense to me that he would be, from some of the things he says, or the way he says them, even though I'd always pictured him as white before when reading the books.

Cillian Murphy is a great actor, and I'd be happy to see him in the part, if not for my new belief that he should probably be played by a black man.

Nerd is a good description. In a way, he's a math nerd, too.

This is why I also think Jeremy Davies, who plays Daniel Faraday on Lost, would be another good Troy.

Maybe someone can think of a good black actor for a math / wargamer nerd...

Cillian Murphy could play Thomas Covenant.

He's like Gary Oldman or Johnny Depp... his range is incredible. There is no character he couldn't play convincingly.

I think so, too. Actually, for the characters I feel it does not matter if the actor is someone we normally associate with seriousness or alarm. If the actor is capable of playing the part, then that's good. Ben Stiller, for example, might manage an older Mohram.
