SRD's Sense of Fun

Post by Dragonlily »

I tried giving you a quote fom Chapter 2 of THE MAN WHO FOUGHT ALONE, but so many of the chortles depend on the way the situation builds up.

Then, I discovered I was reading instead of typing... :-)

I just found out that we have all miscomprehended the true meaning of the word "bane". After reading some of Burns´Poems I found out that "bane" in fact means "bone".

But which bone? Lord Fouls Backbone? His Radius or Scapula?

I believe it is the ring, but since that wasn't listed I chose Thomas Covenant, who is the White Gold.

I don't think so...just because at that point in the book TC was hardly a "bane" to anybody. He didn't in any way threaten Foul at that time; instead he served Foul's plans, for the most part. He couldn't even be called a "bane" of the land at that point, either, since Drool (and just about any other resident of the land more powerful than a teenage girl) was clearly the more powerful of the two in the first book. I think it must be the Illearth Stone...partially because it is described as a bane. That's the word used, so it makes sense to me.

Well I see where you're going with that, but if you say that it can't be Thomas Covenant because he wasn't a major player in the 1st book, well then you can't say that it was the illearth stone either by your own rules.

The second book wasn't called the Illearth War for nothing.

_______

My viewpoint on it being the ring is that its much like any other series and has an overall agenda. It's called "The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant". Even the 3rd trilogy will be called this, and he's dead!

Also, Lord Foul had Covenant summoned. He may not have directly summoned him, but he taught Drool how to do it.

Who started this mess....? Landwaster is to blame for this interminable poll! He started this debate, which is more like a de-bait! We are de-baiting, because the hooks are already in our mouths!!

Lord Foul's Bane? All of the above, plus the Lords, the Creator, and anyone else who doesn't want the Land turned into a smoldering celestial trashpile.

The bane? This particular pun is like an onion, in that it gives you bad breath?---no, it's because it has layers! Layers!

"I know what else has layers. Parfait! Everybody loves parfait!"

it wasn't that he wasn't a major player, so much that he had no power to be a bane. Even though the illearth stone didn't play much of a part either, it was still very baneful.

And yes, parfait is wonderful.

Lord Foul's bane is clearly the Illearth stone, or the first book in the series, depending on how you look at it. :)

I wholeheartedly feel it is The Land, nothing else Gets under Fouls Skin like being trapped with all his power and unable to maximize it's potential.
