Since I started this thread, I feel duty-bound to report that there is somebody who has researched this very topic! Here is a story about it:
www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/a ... 02223.html
(Please ignore the fact that it was published on the paper's kids' page...)
From the article, some suggestions for the afflicted:
* Try to replace the earworm with another, perhaps less annoying, song.
* Do something to distract yourself.
* Walk to a different tempo from the one in the earworm.
This has been a public service announcement.
I would also like to report that I successfully dodged a major earworm this morning. Thankfully, the radio announcer told me *before* he hit the play button that he was about to inflict upon the world Debby Boone's "You Light Up My Life"....

(Emphasis my own.)Some people get more earworms than others. Who are they? It turns out that musicians are more likely to get them than non-musicians, and women get them more than men. For some reason, people who worry a lot are more earworm-prone than non-worriers.
I seem to have all three of these traits. No wonder I always have a song stuck in my head!

I'm neither a musician nor a woman, and I don't think I worry any more than the average person. So why is it that I rarely experience a minute without mental music?
In any case, what I have stuck in there now is lyricless. It's Panthro's theme, from Thundercats. If anyone wants to hear it for themselves, they'll have to go here and spin on to 1:48, then listen to the background music. I don't know anywhere else to find it online.

I'm just glad that I don't get an "earworm" for "elevator" music!

I was looking at the cat stare out the bathroom window yesterday morning, and ever since I've had the line from Watching The Wheels going through my head. "I'm just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round; I really love to watch them roll".

Thanks to the title of the thread about the black hole generator I am unable to get REM's "It's the end of the world as we know it" song out of my head.
Now if I could just find a way to wear live bees as jewelry all the time.....

I heard this song over the gas station PA system Sunday night and it's been running through my head ever since.
It was such a flashback to hear it. Plus, I love the song and Shai's rendition of it.

Well, then...hopefully it is a little more soothing hearing the voices with some music playing behind them.CovenantJr wrote:I do though.Cagliostro wrote:It's better than hearing voices, isn't it?CovenantJr wrote:I'm neither a musician nor a woman, and I don't think I worry any more than the average person. Ditto, though for some reason I am channeling Great Big Sea's cover.Cameraman Jenn wrote:Thanks to the title of the thread about the black hole generator I am unable to get REM's "It's the end of the world as we know it" song out of my head.
It did manage to drive out In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth... oh wait, no. It's back.

I experience the name thing as well. It's apparently not uncommon, though, when one is in a hypnogogic state (falling asleep) which is when I experience it. It can be extremely disconcerting though, especially when the voice is particularly loud.CovenantJr wrote:![]()
Seriously though, I sometimes hear people saying my name even when I'm alone. And I once heard my alarm clock going off while I was in the shower and out of earshot of the clock.

Not sure of the web-site, but I do know that there are sound bytes on a few songs.
