Who named the months of the year?

Post by aTOMiC »

What is up with the names of the month. Every year I notice the same thing and it puzzles me. For example. Why isn't it called Octember? Wouldn't that fit better with the other three months names at the end of the year? And why is October the 10th month and not the 8th?

January, February....March? What the heck? That doesn't fit at all. June, July....August? WTF? Why isn't August October? Who's in charge here anyway? Just some observations.

Oh and I predict that someone at some point will skip past the fun I'm trying to have and give me a history lesson on the orgins of the months names. Let me put out that fire before it gets started.

Forgive my total lack of comprehension, but exactly what kind of fun are you trying to have if you don't care about the answers to the questions? I would love to join in the fun if I understood what the game was. :?

YEAAA!...and speakin of fun..as a youngster,,playin board games on a rainy day was fun..especially Monopoly..The only problem there was the rules..To me they were clear as a bell,, rite there printed on the box lid. Yet some friends always wanted to change things up..all fines go in a special square,,players can loan money..etc etc etc...They always said,, it doesn't say you Can't do that!!,,,so it was with special glee,,if I was the first to go Lehman Bros,, i mean belly up, bankrupt..if I was the first,,i'd pick up the board and toss it in the air...Hotels and houses top hat and all sent flying..Well,, the rules didn't say I couldn't do that!!
If she withdrew from exaltation, she would be forced to think- And every thought led to fear and contradictions; to dilemmas for which she was unprepared.

dear... do what i do when that chunk of matter between my ears starts trying to function... start shopping... go to the Vans site and design a pair of shoes... get some episodes of Robot Chicken off Frostwire... download the POKeMON Simulator game and play it for hours upon hours until you get to the 100th level, then call your significant other and fish for complements of your gaming prowess... take a nap...

(Auckland Anniversary in Auckland, New Zealand - Monday closest to January 29) This is my birthday... can i be honored as some sort of god in that country? I'd seriously like to be carried in a chair around town and have flowers flung from every window and lots and lots of bread baked in my honor...

Why don't they come around in alphabetical order?
Huh?
What's up with that?
It would be easier to memorize, wouldn't it?

Hah. Just yesterday I read the "Divus Augustus" chapter in Suetonius and learned about how Augustus renamed Sextillis to August.

In case you were wondering, no, Tom didn't ask a shitload of stupid questions when he was kid. I probably did, as do most boys, but he was sorta quiet. Guess he's just trying to make up for lost time.

If you are kidding, then  good one.

If you aren't kidding, then  it appears I need to immediately go out and start shopping for continence pants, for I am officially old school. "Did you ever wonder why you never see old people outdoors between 7 & 8 PM on Sunday nights...?"

It was bound to happen... but I'm only 36......

Wow, what I wouldn't give to be able to ask that.....think 'Grumpier Old Men' without any of their redeeming qualities.

Oh, and March, the 3rd month, has 5 letters, while May, the 5th month, has 3. I smell a conspiracy!

And why doesn't the name of *every* month have an "r" in it?

Thanks buddy.

Every month with an "r" eh? I kinda like that.

May = Ray or Mary
June = Jurne (I think some people pronounce it that way anyhow).
July = Jurly (same notation)
August = Argust (Boy I really like the sound of ARGUST!)

I wasn't kidding, but then I have this tendency to not know who people are. For example, I've had Tom Cruise explained to me at least six times, and I still have no idea who he is.
And you're not old enough for those special pants yet, you're only 15 years older than me.

Take the first letters of the last six months of the year and it spells J-A-S-O-N-D. So, what we need to do is find this Jason D. fellow and ask him why the months are so screwed up!

No offense intended to anyone in Hollywood (they are people, too ... even if typically surgically enhanced) but your life will likely continue to develop just fine without knowing the "current crop" of movie stars. :)

Thanks, AjK. The only real issue I have with not knowing who people are is that I usually don't get jokes or references that involve these people, and I don't like not getting it. Ah, well. Such is life.

Please feel free to call me Andy. I just switched my username to AjK because I am inherently lazy and wanted to minimize my login effort. (Closer to the truth is that I can't wait to get onto KW and thus have no patience for a long user name. )

Good point. IMO sometimes those jokes have more entertainment value than some of the movie performances that these people put out.

I was thinking more along the lines of Augurst. But your way works too.

Or -- no, wait! -- we could just add -er to the end of every month that doesn't already have it:

Januaryer
Februaryer
Marcher
Apriler
Mayer
Juner (Juneer?)
Julyer
Auguster

I'm just lookin' for some consistency here....
