Cail wrote:No, you're just being argumentative. In no way, shape, or form are The Black Crowes worthy to carry The Allman Brothers' jock straps. I said that was my opinion, and I stand by it. I said that analogy was about as appropriate and correct as 'N Sync and Justin Timberlake being anywhere near the same level as CSN&Y and Neil Young (an opinion I'd wager you agree with).danlo wrote:I didn't compare them-you and Endymion did---I simply like them in their own right--I agree with you that they shouldn't be compared but your jockstrap and Justin Timberlake comments are simply uncalled for.
Now if you like, I can follow your lead and post something in another forum about your eagerness to argue, but I imagine you'd probably chastise me for that.
Edit- Joe Cocker isn't dead.
And that's the big issue I have with discussions like this.....Everyone we're talking about is still around. I doubt very much U2 is interested in passing a torch.
Who says someone has to be dead before they pass the torch. Some of these rock bands will still be touring when they're 80..if the money is still there, but will they still be relevant?

danlo, we're all friends here; and as a friend, I'm thinking you're taking Cail's comments too personally. And Cail, once again you not only don't back down, but you make sure nobody even thinks you ever considered backing down, by continuing to say you're not backing down when just ignoring danlo would have been enough. Notice that I'm not a mod anymore? It's because I got tired of being in the middle of these pointless spats all the time.danlo wrote:Saying your comments are uncalled for is my opinion too, bubba-being argumentative OMG bite me! This is just music we're talking about--you want to threaten me about this?

I was just trying to get danlo to quote the poster he was referring to, because he was talking about Cail's post, but he posted it after my post. And now you think I'm commenting about you, which in an odd sort of way makes my point about needing to quote the poster you're referring to.
As for the baton thing, I don't believe in the concept. Nobody else can be Bono or Dwayne Allman or Joe Cocker; so while there might be artists who have a similar sound, there really is no way (or need) to have them pick up someone else's cause or fight or calling or whatever, and carry it on. That, of course, doesn't stop idiot dj's from announcing such moronic drivel as "They're the next Pink Floyd!" in reference to Red Rider's one good tune Lunatic Fringe (didn't sound anything like Floyd, BTW).

Thank you dAN.
Red Rider, while a good band, wasn't fit to carry Pink Floyd's......ahhh, you get my point.

I love Oasis, but....no. And, I'd like to point out that Oasis never went out there and said they were, or wanted to be, or thought about being, the next Beatles. I, on the other hand, have often mentioned being the next Ecuador Spartacus.

Well it was definitely the music press, in the UK especially, that pushed the "next Beatles" thing. But think about it. Their style is definitely Beatles-influenced (most famous example being Wonderwall Music, a semi-obscure George Harrison instrumental album, as a connection to the famous Oasis single), and their image as a band is sort of Beatlesque. They sort of invited the comparison, outrageous as it might have been.
Dare I say that this is fed by music journalists and listeners being lazy. There was no new Dylan, or Zeppelin, or Hendrix. There are bands who were clearly influenced by them (as Oasis was clearly influenced by The Beatles and The Rolling Stones), but there's no clear torch-passing.
But that's music journalism. I remember reading a review of The Outfield's 2nd album "Bangin'" in Rolling Stone, and they said something to the effect that The Outfield was filling the void left by The Police.
WTF? Not even close.
But there you have it.
dAN, everyone knows you're the new Waddley.
Oh, and that Southerland Castle is actually a spaceship.

I always figured that guy in Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young would be the next Neil......but I never expected Todd Rundgren to be the next Ric Ocasik.

I couldn't resist. XTC was the new Beatles <grin>.Lord Mhoram wrote:This reminds me about the need of music journalists to look for the "new Dylan," for example (Conor Oberst was one such candidate). Dylan's one where nobody has ever picked up his baton, in my opinion. Or the "new Beatles" - Oasis. Seriously?
But seriously. Didn't mean to upset people, step on mores etc. So if this type thread is upsetting, I'll refrain in the future. Peace.
