Fighter Jet to shoot down Aircraft Carrier sized UFO.

Now if this story were to be true and the pilot had been successful I would like to know why the moron who ordered him to do this deserves to breathe?

A UFO the size of an Aircraft Carrier zipping off at 10,000 mph says maybe I shouldn't unload a salvo of missiles at it in case it has, oh I don't know maybe death-rays or really nasty surprises that could say level England into the stone age over a three hour lapse in civility.

Sometimes I shudder at these x-files releases on what's going to happen if one of these generals actually manages to piss off an advanced Alien Race.

The key thing to realise is that he was ordered to shoot down a 'UFO' during the Cold War. He wasn't ordered to shoot down an 'alien starship' just an 'unidentified flying object', which is, from a militaristic mindset, fundamentally different. For all the Royal Defense knew, it could have been an attacking aircraft or a spying aircraft; no doubt they had attempted to make contact with it. Had it been an alien ship, and I highly doubt it, it would have picked up the communication. In that regard I don't blame those issuing the order to shoot it down.

Sorry, my original post was harsh towards the commander. Still an Aircraft Carrier sized radar image moving at such speeds would beg the question of it's origins and intent. Just firing blind and dumb at it is like blasting away at the coolant systems in a nuke plant with a howitzer to plug a leak.

Depends on the relative speeds and what it's made of. Methinks it is more the case of air inversion creating ghosting on the radar; however how that then shows speed is another thing entirely . . . .I don't think it's more likely that it was an alien spacecraft.

Now, if there had been a rather unknown large object of immense power sitting over England the question begs if the pilot would have followed his orders and opened fire, would UK let alone the human race have suffered for the commander's decision?
It's all hypothetical, but the fire first mentality even in the cold war could have led to a response by the Russians in some other arena with far reaching effects. It's not like a surveillance blimp can outrun the Royal Air-force in its own back yard when confirmation should be the priority before aggression. Lastly a group of missiles chasing down a shadow spells potential disaster for civilians in the surrounding area.

Makes you wonder just what else has been kept under wraps and may be "declassified" in the future.

Also kind of make me wonder what the world would be like today if they had succeeded in shooting down such an immense object. If it was alien in origin and the ramifications of the technology and social impact it would have if no consequences had followed suit.

I'm guessing that any interstellar craft of that size and capability, would have to have a hull that would be proof against the hazards presented by traveling at tremendous speeds through the kinds of debris you would encounter especially in interplanetary space would also be proof against the armament of a late 50s F-86.

I watching some discovery show just on that problem of interstellar travel. They surmised that the ship would use gravity focused forward in order to repulse the debris. It would also somehow mitigate the problems of light speed. I wish I had payed better attention at the time to add to our discussion.

You would think so but who knows.
Sounds like to me that the space ship needed a quick refill of water and or some gaseous element in our atmosphere.
It was probably responsible for the holes in our ozone layer a few decades later!
;)

Still it would be awesome if alien races were checking us out.
I just hope they recorded everything so that whenever the time comes when we communicate one of them will say "Oh not only do we know what killed the dinosaurs we have it recorded. Run document 9998302 for the Earthlings to see."

I'm still baffled by the whole time/relativity thing.

We ride a ship traveling at the speed of light for ten year.
10 years passes for us in the ship but hundreds of years pass for the people on Earth that we left behind?
WTF?

SWEET! I have always wanted to create a "native earther" party that is against contact w/ aliens or leaving earth w/ space travel. Now I have an excuse!
"Oh not only do we know what killed the dinosaurs we have it recorded. Run document 9998302 for the Earthlings to see."
It's a video of the alien ships gunning down and nuking dinosaurs for the hell of it. Intimidation tactic: WE killed the dinosaurs, don't mess with us.

Actually, the real reason the dinosaurs died?

What I don't understand about this story is why there is no corroborating evidence? Well, that's a figure of speech - I do understand why there is not - but bear with me. Why is it that such a massive spaceship or aircraft of this size was not seen by anyone else over the United Kingdom at the time - there's not one other report? Forgive me for making an assumption about the craft's capabilities, but when it reached immense speeds, why was there no sonic boom? Did other radar stations detect it passing over them?

I honestly think, as all we have is one man's story, is that this thing is just a fabrication. I would love to believe in aliens visiting Earth, but given the paucity of evidence . . .

Y'know, it's funny that you mention them, Cag, because through the early days of the financial meltdown, I kept thinking that we all needed handbooks with "Don't Panic!" in large, friendly letters on the cover...

I think this story is highly implausible. There's nothing interesting in Norfolk.
