America did itself proud!
Sorry if there's a thread for this somewhere, but I don't see it.
A black president of the US!! A scant forty years after guys like Evers, X, and King were assassinated, and children were blown up in churches - for wanting to be equal. I really didn't expect this to happen in my lifetime. Still so much racial crap going on here. Stupid, stupid people are everywhere, eh? But those who would vote for, say, Charles Manson over any black candidate are far fewer than those who judge these things by each person's credentials. Perhaps we are moving toward a country where everyone is not "judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. "
I don't know... I can't seem to put this into words. I believe this is among this country's greatest moments. Such change. Such growth. I'm just having difficulty saying what I mean.

Despite my ideological differences with the President-elect, I am so proud that we have finally overcome the shame of our past. It is truly an historic moment in American history.

I said pretty much the same in response to dlb's post in the for those voting in the US thread. But I am far from saying it so eloquently. Thanks Fist.Fist and Faith wrote:Sorry if there's a thread for this somewhere, but I don't see it.

I wholeheartedly agree as well and would like to add that social change doesn't happen overnight. Change is not a switch to be flipped or a flower to be plucked. Rather, it is a mountain that must be climbed (bonus points awarded to the first Watcher who can identify the source of that paraphrasedlbpharmd wrote:I agree.Cail wrote:Despite my ideological differences with the President-elect, I am so proud that we have finally overcome the shame of our past. I would to take a second to credit every person who truly saw the prejudices of those that came before them and worked to lessen (however slightly) those same prejudices in themselves. Every instance of that process improves things from generation to generation. It is awesome to see the positive evolution of a people.

I am proud to say that I voted for Obama, and was elated when he won Tuesday night. The first thing that came into my head when I heard Charlie Gibson on ABC announce that he was, indeed, our new president elect was Martin Luther King's words ringing loud and clear... "I have a dream today!!!"
What a wonderful night for America. Not just because Obama is of color, but because the people rose above race and chose the person that I believe was the best person for the job.
The country is tired, and I think our new president is just the person to wake it up and breath new life into it. And for the those of color, well, he marks the end on a long hard journey and the beginning of a new day.
Yes we can!

Thanks for starting this thread, F&F.
I am so proud of our country.
At work yesterday, I was looking at all the kids coming to visit their new siblings or cousins in the mother-baby unit and thinking, "These kids will grow up with a black man as their president and think that is perfectly normal." As it should be.
What a wonderful thought!

Awesome website MsMary!!
My daughter, Brooke voted for the first time in this election and she is so proud knowing that she was part of making history. And she said, "Mom, when I was voting for Obama I thought of Naeem, Ayize, Imani and Meggie. And I thought how much better the world is going to be for my little brothers and sisters."
It won't happen over night, but it will happen. There is an electricity in the air and hum in all the voices calling out for change. How far we've come...

My client said something profound to me today, and I thought I would share it here. He said, "Just think of all the people who woke up today in a different world. . . one in which a black man can be president of the of the Untied States. This changes everything!"
Of course, I can't wait for the day when we can all wake up and say that a woman can be president. . . but then again, as others have said. . . change doesn't happen overnight.

And I can't wait for the day
when the election of an African American,
Asian American,
First Native,
Latino American,
Woman,
etc.,
to the office of President of the United States, receives no notice out of the ordinary at all.
...because as long as our gender and our race is remarkable, we haven't truly overcome the biases of the past.
Until that day, however...
This is the day the L-rd has made...
...let us rejoice!
And be glad in it.

There is no doubt in my mind that the promise of America as the Land of Opportunity has been demonstratively expanded by the majority of adult voting choice makers. Not to belittle the huge with implications moment in history, don't forget persons of " color" have been holding public office as mayors, governors, congressmen and senators..and as Sect of State and advisers to the President and lets not forget the even more long lasting position holders in the Supreme Court and lower federal courts jugdeships. When viewed from this perspective,,perhaps one can see..the " genius" or perhaps the astuteness of vision or the simple realization by Barrack Obama, two years ago when he decided to make the run. Realizing the " Opportunity"..that the Time was right,,that the Tide of Time was in favor of him fullfilling the Opportunity,, And Then Acting On It, with all the chances of failure and success yammering at him ever since. That alone,,makes Barrack Obama one Great American and an American We all can be proud of. That is Change enough for me.
If she withdrew from exaltation, she would be forced to think- And every thought led to fear and contradictions; to dilemmas for which she was unprepared.

What you guys have already said.
I've been touched by the stories of black folks who lived through segregation (couldn't drink at certain drinking fountains, etc.) and are now seeing a black man become President. It really is an awesome moment in America's history. (And I mean "awesome" in its original sense, not in the Valley Girl sense.)
