Jenn showed earlier that you can enter more than once.
And, I think until wayfriend announces a winner, entries can still be submitted.
So, if you thought of another one go ahead and submit it.

Unless you mean you wish you had submitted one that was submitted by someone else. Then, I think you should praise the entry, even if it makes your own chance of winning less...

Me...
I'm happy with my choice, even if it doesn't win. :)

We're allowed more than one entry? Well, I'll wait for the official sanction from Wayfriend.

Oh, and I'm really not in this for the (gloriously fake) money, I just think this is a nice thing Wayfriend is doing.

As many entries as you want. CMJ always does! Then again, she thinks she's special. But still ... as many entries as you want.

And since I've been posting games on Tuesday I've been letting them stay open until Monday. Which means....

Last call! About 7 hours left.

Well, no one is going to be happy about my decision, because it is purely a judgement call, unless there is some good audience participation.

dlbpharmd: "So they put away their tools, and banked their fires, and made ready their homes as if in preperation for departure."

Invoking Stonefollower's telling of the the demise of the Giants, to Covenant and Bannor. Very nice choice. Hear the Giant's voice breaking.

Fist and Faith: "He did not hear Lena arise, gather the shreds of her clothing, speak, or climb away out of the shattered ravine."

The immediate aftermath of the rape scene. But I find dlbpharmd's reference more tearful ...

Matrixman: "She didn't have anything left except her smile."

Ah, the dancing leper. That scene is tearful, not just for Covenant's miserable tale, but for how Mhoram and Elena and Troy respond to it. Fine choice! I'm going to move this one into the lead.

High Lord Tolkien: "Wayfriend, you and I are brothers and I'm moving in with you next week!"

While that made me cry for a week straight, I'm afraid it's not a line from the Chronicles. Sorry, man.

Menolly: "Reaching out to them as if they were all one, as if they were only Foamfollower in multiform guise, Covenant took them into his embrace, and wept white fire."

Yes. Coercri. I was wondering who would invoke it first. Menolly is in the lead now.

Camerman Jenn #1: "'Foamfollower?' He wept, 'My Friend?'"

Yes, the end of The Power That Preserves is powerful. Still ...

Cameraman Jenn #2: "For an instant his eyes gazed towards his companions and yearned as if he wished to say farewell--wished poignantly at the last that he had found some way to go on living."

Seadreamer! Damn you, Jenn. I think you have the lead now. Maybe Coercri is a more tearful scene, but I think you nailed it with a better line from yours - that one really brings it too me.

balon: "'I love you' she replied in a voice wet with blood."

The demise of Lena. Good scene. But it doesn't surpass Coercri or Seadreamer or Saltheart in my eyes. I see lots of people found it otherwise, though.

Avatar: "'Thomas Covenant, I have named you Giant-Friend, but it is not enough. You are the Earth-Friend...no other name suffices.'"

Ah, the Search Giants see Revelstone for the first time, and Covenant utters the ode to Revelstone. Very, very fine choice. But, again, I find it second to the quotes by the others.

Here're some one's that I might have chosen.
  • "Now go," he gasped. "Have mercy on me."

"Giant!" he cried. "Don't you know me?"

    And they came.

    "He's on fire."

Not one of his companions obeyed.

"Felling them, Pitchwife weeps as no Haruchai has ever wept."

A small clear space like hope opened in his heart as he followed his dreams into the Banefire.
Dammit, now I'm all Image again. Anyway...

And the winner is ...
Spoiler
Cameraman Jenn.

It was a really tough call, but she had the combination of a good reference and a good sentence.

True, I knew the scene I wanted, but I had to look up the exact quote.

Stonefollower --> Foamfollower. Sorry - I was concentrating.
dlbpharmd wrote:Bah! Bloody Wayfriend's pet!
Ooh, is that an option, Jenn?!?! I would like to have a pet ... but seriously, have you seen Jenn rave at me?

Menolly almost won. Epic scene, if not an imaginative choice. I think she owed us a more carefully selective line for that choice. IMO, the faucets start to leak with
In wild magic, white puissance without sound, he shouted: Come! This is the caamora! Come and be healed! And they came.

There was another option that I thought of but didn't enter. In TIW, when Mhoram and Bannor take Covenant to his rooms after the Summoning....Covenant is feeling the effect of hurtloam, so he is about to fall asleep. Earlier he was ranting about not wanting to be Summoned because Joan had called him ("She was my wife!") and as Mhoram is about to depart, Covenant says "She'll never forgive me." To me, that's such a sad line, especially when one considers how Joan's life turned out after that.

Well, I have another 500, so here goes.

This Week's Contest

This weeks contest is to come up with a funny and yet profound "like a man".

What's a "like a man"? It's a staple of Donaldson's writing style; I'm sure some examples will jog your memory.
The next morning, he began the day's riding like a man torn between opposing poles of insanity.

Like a man battering himself in armless impotence against a blank doom, he leaped after the High Lord.

After a moment, he sat down, murmuring aimlessly to himself, wandering in his mind like a man striving to comprehend a language he no longer knew.

When he left his rooms the next morning, he looked like a man who had spent the night wrestling in vain against his own damnation.

But when Covenant awakened briefly during the night and looked about him, he saw the Graveler staring up into the darkness of the heather like a man bidding farewell to the use of his eyes.

When his wrists were healed, he rose direly to his feet and stood erect like a man who had lost no blood and could not be touched.

Carefully, like a man who did not want to die, Covenant got to his feet.

He entered the relative safety of his ship and headed toward the bridge like a man for whom danger and survival had become simple.

The DA director coughed like a man who'd spent a lifetime breathing Earth's clotted atmosphere instead of processed station air.

Milos complied like a man who was so busy devising complicated forms of murder that he couldn't think about anything else.

The malign yellow in his eyes made him look like a man who hated everything.

etc. etc. ad nauseum
The topic of your "like a man" can be anything you want, it doesn't have to be about any story. But it does need to have "like a man" in it.

Judging will be based on whether or not you convey that you understand the subtle yet distict Donaldsonian style at play in these passages. And if they are funny!

Audience: post in this thread to show which entry you think deserves to win! The judge pays attention to these things.

(Entries are accepted until I post the winner.)

Edit: "like a woman" will be accepted without detectable penalty.

As he comtemplated the consequences of Linden's actions he grimaced painfully, like a man straining to evacuate his bowels the morning after having eaten an entire block of tillamook cheddar cheese.

... I don't want to get any "pet" complaints later when Jenn is the only one who posted an entry. (She competes alone, like a man in a stinkiest fart contest.)
