You can get a Gmail account if you're invited by someone who already has one. Or, you can sign up for an account using your mobile phone.

If you want an invitation I can probably work out how to send you one

Meh. . . I've had gmail since September 2004 . . not particularly impressed. That's the reason I stayed with my yahoo account. Which reminds me. . . I should go log into gmail and read my messages there.

I agree with Quee that MSN is the best for chatting (although I haven't been there in a while). Then again, I've never tried Googletalk, ICQ or AOL, but I'll trust others' opinions that they're not so great. The impression I get from people is that AOL is particularly awful.

Yahoo Messenger is all right. It's what I use to communicate with the yahoo scrabble gang.

Trillian pwns all.... nothing like having 5 different chat profiles up and running under one program. PLUS, MSN windows are way too huge it's almost revolting. Trillian's chat windows are small and sleek and simple, and there are tabs for your different conversation.

Edit: Didn't see that Cov had tried Trillian before... but... I never had a problem with it. It was simple for me to set up and use and all that... but that's just me.

I use Trillian but only for Yahoo and ICQ. MSN doesn't seem to work on this computer but it works on my Dad's computer.

I used to only use trillian, but now I use MSN messenger for MSN, as there's too many features trillian doesn't have. I still use trillian for yahoo and AIM

I agree. I prefer Yahoo for email, hardly use my Gmail account. I mostly chat on AIM and MSN, but I don't use the official clients - I use Adium.
