Have you ever eaten Hamburger Helper?

Post by Farm Ur-Ted »

I must've seen the commercial a thousand times, but I don't think I've ever eaten it before (mixed into a burger, not on its own). Is it any good?

I tried the sloppy joe version and it's incredibly salty and somewhat revolting.
Now if I could just find a way to wear live bees as jewelry all the time.....

I've tried several types.
Don't be afraid, it's just noodles and spices.
Some suck and some are ok.
The best though is the beef noodle one.
It's basic and yummy.

Don't remember ever trying it. But I would like to see the Hamburger Helper hand slap around the Pillsbury doughboy.

Grew up on Hamburger Helper. It's not great, but some's tolerable. The Mexican and Stroganov are good, but the mac and cheese isn't. Avoid Tuna Helper like the plague.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Full of sodium and other preservatives, but relatively tasty.

Tuna Helper has actually been outlawed by the UN Human Rights Council.

I never had it growing up, and once I moved in to my first place, I tried it a couple times. I never found anything that I was very comfortable with, but I did take to a cheesy tuna helper. But I haven't had either in many years. And I haven't really felt the need to either.

Never grew up with it, but due to unfortunate financial situations it's cheap. So I feed it to my family once in a while. The most unfortunate thing is that my son and husband like it. I haven't ventured outside of the cheeseburger macaroni one and probably never will.

Hamburger Helper is delicious.

But Farm-Ur Ted, that's sort of a random question. Why do you ask?

I used to make it a lot when the kids were little. Beef stroganoff and the lasagna one were the best, iirc. I would usually make it with ground turkey instead of hamburger, to cut the fat content. But yeah, it's still Chemical City -- chock full of sodium and unpronounceable bits.

I haven't made it a long time now and I don't miss it.

Speaking of near-starvation: this stuff and Kraft mac & cheese (or the store equivalent) were staples for us for a long, long time.

i haven't had hamburger helper since i lived in the trailer park (oh 'bout 37 years ago now) nor shake n bake neither!

i grew up and learned how to cook.
my brother informs me they had the stroganof one last night for dinner, he and my mother. heh. (correct. my mother grew up but DIDN'T learn how to cook, i.e. make her OWN sauces instead of relying on powdered ones)

i do, however, remember liking the stroganoff one. god help me, i liked the tuna helper too!!

i have invented my own version of the tuna helper using bechamel.
i do add peas.
or...i put tuna and peas in mac and cheese, which is really good too! :D
(and garnish with jellied cranberry sauce, yum yum!!)

we also have our own version of beenie weenies. dijon mustard is the secret ingredamunt.
