The Day The Earth Stood Still
I haven't seen the remake yet, but I plan to this week. I just watched the original again, and in a fit of curiousity, I looked up the original short story to read so I could judge which version of the movie is truest to the source. Here's the link to the story:

Dandelion don't tell no lies
Dandelion will make you wise
Tell me if she laughs or cries
Blow away dandelion
I'm afraid there's no denying
I'm just a dandelion
a fate I don't deserve.

Yeah, but is it better or worse than the 1951 version?

We saw it on New Year's Eve and it's no better or worse than the original (Remember, the original didn't exactly have much going for it).
Actually, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Reeves's acting was the worst part of the movie (followed closely by Kathy Bates's). Other than that, though, it was enjoyable in a one-off way.
Then, last night, we watched the 1984 version of "A Christmas Carol," the one with George C Scott, and I was surprised by the thematic similarities. Both stories are essentially about being given one last chance to change your ways... in "A Christmas Carol," it's an individual man who has been asked to change, and in "The Day the Earth Stood Still," it's the whole world, but it's the same idea.
It's funny, though, that in explaining the movie to people who've never seen the original, the aliens always come off as the bad guys. After all, they show up and say, "Resistance is futile. You WILL die."

Spoiler
Oh, and I was amused by their interpretation of "Gray goo." It's almost as if someone heard an explanation of Nanobots as "little robots that eat everything and make more of themselves", and then based everything in this movie on that statement.

Ah, Jennifer Connelly... worth watching in anything
