New Years Eve traditions

I'm usually on my own on New Years eve. My husband is in a band and he always has some gig or other to play at.

I don't mind though. The Playstation 2 keeps me company.

I think I'll either do the Emperor, or I may do Scheherazade... although that's only an option if I want to feel melancholy which may actually suit my mood.

We were to have friends over but they've stood us up for a better option... Bastards!

So I'm figuring I'll have a few quiet ales with myself, read some Erikson, wonder about life, the universe and everything for far too long, kiss the new year goodbye by lying beneath the celestial blanket and whispering a word or two to those who smile upon me once and a while...hoping they'll be kind again soon.

Yep, that's my new year's tradition: going absolutely insane (or getting quite drunk anyway.....).

The last time I watched, it was the year Dick Clark was recovering from his stroke and Regis Philbin was filling in for him. I spent most of the telecast shouting at Regis to shut up. Gods, that guy is annoying!

I'm curious as to what Bernstein recording that is, Sea. Since it's the 9th, let me guess that it's the "Ode to Freedom" concert he gave after the fall of the Berlin wall, since that's the most widely available version by Bernstein. And if that is in fact what you have, I agree - it's a good performance!

Didn't consider the Emperor concerto. Good choice for New Year's!

Nicely put! Of course, it's too bloody cold here to be leisurely lying under the stars, unless you're dead drunk...or just dead.

Like every year we will meet with some friends, have a great raclette-eating, a quiet evening (me trying to stay awake till midnight, most time without success). At midnight we walk to the stable, congratulate the horses ´cause it´s their official birthday in northern hemisphere, have some champagne and watch the firework from the surrounding villages.

Well this year was indeed different. We three played Rockband until just before midnight. I did not have to rouse anyone. What a great year so far!

We spent the New Year with our former foster boys, Adrian and Issak, and their parents, relatives and friends-I was up till 3 playing 10k, or you may know it as Farkle (a variation of Yathzee). 5 year old Adrian taught me how to Wii-bowl and was upset I beat him this morning-oh well he had his revenge last night as he totally spanked me at boxing 280-0. The kids were maniacs either constantly flying around on scooters or playing comp-games.

We had posole and stuffed sopapillas for dinner and watched the ball drop on NBC, my request.

We generally stay home for New Year's eve. We watch the ball drop in Times Square on TV. At around midnight, we have homemade eggnog spiked with Myers's dark rum. We also have roasted chestnuts.

This year we went to a friend's house for pizza dinner - it was a party in honor of a newly wed couple. When we came home, we resumed the usual New Year's eve activities, except that I was too lazy to roast the chestnuts, so we'll probably have them today.

We watched "Wall-E" and "Escape to Witch Mountain" and listened to the Capitol Steps' New Years podcast; watched the ball drop on ABC (I can't seem to tune in the NBC station for whatever reason -- mainly laziness

); ate a bunch of junk food; and eventually went to bed.

Yup, that's the one. The girls came up with a two-DVD set of "Escape to..." and "Return from..." as apparently a third movie is coming out directly -- more than 30 years after the first one was released. Cheez, and SRD caught flak for waiting 20 years to write Runes!
