Golden Globes

Post by Rigel »

Bruce Springsteen won Best Song against Clint Eastwood. I haven't seen "Gran Torino" yet (though I've heard it's good), but I would've liked Eastwood to beat Springsteen just so he could say he did :)

Colin Farrell got Best Actor in a Comedy for "In Bruges," which I didn't realize was a comedy.

And Heath Ledger got Best Supporting Actor, which wasn't entirely unexpected.

Other surprises were that Kate Winslet who hadn't won anything at the Oscars or Golden Globes despite several nominations, finally won Best Supporting Actress AND Best Actress. Quite a kick-ass night.
I really dug the awards this year. I've seen Slumdog Millionaire and that's about it. Well, I guess the Dark Knight as well. Okay, I've seen a few of these movies, but none of the recent ones other than SM.
And I just want to state that I love Tina Fey. From her "aww shut up" claw at Alec Baldwin when he thanked her, to Tracy Jordan being the face of the show. Oh, and Ricky Gervais was fantastic as well.

I must say that the award shows need to let actors relax and not try to rush through their speeches. I preferred no cutoff from the actors, as the Oscars have had no really good speeches the last few years due to the imperial hand of the band and directors of the ceremony cutting off mike's and whatnot. Shave the long-ass legacy awards down to 5 minutes tops, and you'll have enough time to do the rest of the ceremony.

Everyone carefully dancing around Mickey Rourke winning Best dramatic actor eh? I've seen 3 trailers of The Wrestler and it looks awesome-I'll be watching him on Oprah today.

The Wrestler was good. Rourke did alright (he was Mickey Rourke, albeit in top form and fitting the character to a tee). But as much as I generally don't care for Marissa Tomei, she played the most convincing stripper ever (though Cherry Daiquiri in Choke was alright, too).

As for In Bruges... not bad. Farrell was very good in the role. But I can already imagine a lot of disappointed renters. Dunno if it's eligible, but I would've chosen Shane Jacobson from Kenny.

Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

In Bruge was great, but do not see it expecting a comedy!!! It is a drama with darkly funny bits...

Winslett is astounding in The Reader...you wouldn't know it was her except for her skin, and she's brilliant in Revolutionary Road, she deserves both in my book.

Tomei was truly great as a stripper in The Wrestler, and Meryl Streep is her usual brilliant self in Doubt. Hathaway gives a knockout performance in Rachel Getting Married.

Come to think of it, this is probably, quite easily the best year for female performances I've ever seen.
