Eaters of the dead.

Post by Fullmetal660 »

I've been a huge fan of the film "The 13th warrior" for a while now, but only just noticed that it's based on a Michael Chrichton book called "Eaters of the dead".
Has anybody read it? If so what did you think, I may pick up a copy but I can't decide.

I read it in the '70s. Really liked it. Can't remember much...specifically, that is. Haven't seen the film, but the book was supposedly a true story.(Which grabbed me, I was big into the Vikings at the time, early teen that I was.) Of course it's not true, but I think it may be based on a story that has survived from the 10th century or there about. Very short book, maybe 100 pages.

i read it. didn't really care for it. altho i LOVE The 13th Warrior.

i didn't know it was based on Eaters of the Dead either when i first saw
it and so i assumed that it was simply a retelling of Beowulf. a really
great retelling. because i loved the film so much i assumed i would also
like the book, even tho i was never a big creighton fan. unfortunately that wasn't the case. eaters of the dead was pretty much typical creighton writing which has never held my attention all that well for some reason.

*shrug* i suggest anyone that like the film read the book tho. source material as it were.

Typical Crichton writing? With the exception of Next, his writing style has never been sooo different! :soapbox:

That said, I can see how it can be slow reading, though it isn't very long. I personally, though, loved it. I also love Beowulf, so take my review with a grain or two of salt (not too much though, it's not good for the heart!).
