It isn't even explicitly stated that the monoliths have a physiological impact on out minds at all. It could just as easily be that by *showing* us that the creation of such a wonder is possible, it showed primitive man that we could affect our environment through the use of tools. By showing us an obvious artifact of alien intelligence on the moon, then beaming a signal to Jupiter, we were following the only logical course we would take if we discovered the same thing now.

But look how much we are talking about it! look at how many passions are inflamed by this movie. Any movie that is actually able to inspire loathing, rather than ridicule, (though they aren't mutually exclusive. I can loathe something that is pathetic) must have some value as far as I'm concerned.

Yes, the book came after the movie. The story was a collaboration between Kubrick and Clarke. Clarke later novelized and expanded the story.

Good point. Though I disagree with the movie's worth, I have enjoyed hearing everyone's feelings about it.

The best movie ever made was Army of Darkness, Bruce Campbell kicks ass, his new TV show Burn Notice is very good as well.

I don't really think any of the best picture nominees of the 00s represent the best movies of the decade. ROTK comes closest, as LOTR as a whole is one of the greatest achievements of cinematic history.

I'm just now starting to appreciate how amazing the work is...it's like every shot Jackson used is just perfect and visually stunning, through and through.

I can't necessarily disagree with you on the '00+ nominees, as the offerings are pretty weak compared to the 90s, but what would you say are the top 5 since 00 then?

I personally cannot bring myself to exclude Darren Aronofski and Charlie Kaufman from recognition on any list for this decade. Charlie Kaufman in particular, has risen to be one of the most luminous talents in film history. He may be the greatest screenwriter EVER in film.

Adaptation had wonderful parts...but it was just all over the place and boring at times. Munich was really good, but missing something. The Fountain was visually amazing and a decent story, but didn't quite hit the right note. Children of Men was good, but still had that B-grade scifi underlying feel...too bad, cause it had sooo much potential to be more. Snatch was great fun. Memento is always, well...Memento! Gran Tarino is really, reallly good. All IMO of course.

Fellowship of the Ring
Sin City
The Bourne Identity
AI: Artificial Intelligence

I think that the overall quality of films today compares very favorably with that of past eras.

Love Fellowship, Sin City was great, Bourne was good, AI was at times truly amazing and at others truly boring. Walking Life is one I haven't seen...imdb'ed it - looks good, will probably give it a shot.
