Fawlty Towers (I just picked up the series on VHS for my mom, a former Brit herself, and myself at a thrift store recently) and Ab Fab are great. Never understood the fascination with Red Dwarf, though (maybe because I typically like SciFi to be serious?)Syl wrote:Sorry, Lore, I thought you'd get that I was being ironic with that statement.
See, whenever an American says he doesn't like British humor, as exemplified by the holy grail that is ...The Holy Grail, we're told that we just don't understand irony (hence American comedies are all stupid and Americans themselves are at best suspect). I've had that argument at least twice here and several times on other boards.
Personally, I'm a pretty big fan of The Holy Grail, but you'd have to do a Clockwork Orange number on me to get me to watch Ab Fab, Fawlty Towers, or even Red Dwarf.

what about "Are You Being Served?"...funny as hell sometimes, but maddeningly inconsistent...Syl wrote:Sorry, Lore, I thought you'd get that I was being ironic with that statement.

Well, Grail was funny the first dozen times I saw it, but not so much now. When I'm with a fellow Grail fan and we're quoting, or sometimes with just a random quote, it can be funny. But, for the most part I'm over Grail.Loremaster wrote:Holy Grail is possibly the most overrated and overquoted comedy movie of all time. The Knights of Nee are not funny. The Meaning of Life is excellent, but largely Monty Python is just silly.
Life of Brian is the best Python, by far. I may not laugh out loud anymore when I'm watching it, but I still love it.
Airplane, Airplane II, Blazing Saddles, History of the World, Spaceballs....all good stuff.

Fawlty Towers was great, never got AbFab.

fall far and well Pilots!
yes! I loved Airplane but not Airplane 2matrixman wrote:Nothing in moviedom has made me laugh harder than Airplane! and Airplane II: The Sequel.
and I have one I bet no thinks of.................................
American Dreamer - got terrible reviews but cracked me up!
The loudest truth I ever heard was the softest sound.
I don't think I've ever seen a Jerry Lewis movie in its entirety. I must admit, I've never been a fan of his brand of comedy. Great humanitarian and all, but, sorry, I look elsewhere for my laughs. Still, he's a legend, and that reminds me that I had almost forgotten about the Hope & Crosby "road" pictures. Bob and Bing were a great comedy duo. I don't remember enough of their movies to be able to name a favorite, but they did make me laugh a heckuva lot.Infelice wrote:Only one movie has made me laugh harder than Airplane and thats......matrixman wrote:Nothing in moviedom has made me laugh harder than Airplane! and Airplane II: The Sequel.
Delicate Delinquent with Jerry Lewis..... this was like many many many eons ago, I watched it with my dad, and we were both crippled with laughter.
Must have been something in the moment... at the time.
Woody Allen's Manhattan Murder Mystery is another favorite. It may not be laugh-a-minute, but it tickles me in that inimitable Woody Allen way.
Tell me it ain't so! How could you not love the "Worp" drive and Moonbase commander Bill Shatner? One of the funniest movie cameos ever.lorin wrote:yes! I loved Airplane but not Airplane 2
Yeah, excellent movie.lorin wrote:you know what was also very funny, Galaxy Quest. That was such a great "Star Trek" film.

Galaxy Quest: I didn't think they would have the balls to be so brazen about mocking Trekkies, and I loved that they did
Innerspace: Another great, underappreciated film. Definitely deserves a better reputation than it has.
And speaking of British comedies, wasn't there some rumour that "Yes, Minister" was actually a documentary?

I think a few of the Pink Panther movies were funnier than Dr. Strangelove.

Yes Minister was regarded to be very accurate. The British civil service would leave work by 5pm to be able to watch it.

Dear GOD, have you all no sense of humor?
SPINAL TAP! [But...this one goes to 11.]
Life of Brian is the best Python, though their live performance of skits in "Live at the Hollywood Bowl" is hysterical, especially the pope and Michelangelo, and the scene in "Grail" with (can't recall exact quote) 'you don't become King just because some watery tart throws a sword at you' is uber-classic.
Steve Martin's "The Lonely Guy" is in my top ten [though I'm the only person I know who's seen it]

the hyperbole is a beauty...for we are then allowed to say a little more than the truth...and language is more efficient when it goes beyond reality than when it stops short of it.

I have the VHS of Spinal Tap in my "To be watched, and possibly transferred to DVD" pile (We buy lots of VHS second hand, and if we like them, and they transfer, we transfer to DVD and then cut down the VHS box and put it in a slim line DVD case)Vraith wrote:Dear GOD, have you all no sense of humor?
