I think it means that the instructions are provided in a way that defies seeing them until you follow those steps. Why? I have no idea.

UUE means UUEncode. It's a means of rendering binary data as plain text.

The instructions tell you how to create a .UUE file (UUEncoded file) and use WinZip or WinRar to decode it back into a binary file.

The binary file is a .ZIP file. Which is a means of "archiving" files. Archiving means taking a bunch of files and storing them inside one file, which is easier to pass around than a bunch of files.

Apparently the .ZIP file you will create will be an archive containing at least one file, called readme.txt. Possibly others.

You can examine the files within a .ZIP file with WinZip. Sometimes Windows Explorer can do it for you, just double-click the .ZIP file.

It looks like you'll need to have WinZip handy to do all this. That's software you have to buy if you don't have it already. I recommend 7-Zip as a freeware alternative.

You can decode a UUE file in any number of ways. You don't need to use WinRAR. But you can download it and use it a limited number of times for free. There're free UUDecoders out there.

Remember that the line that says "end" has to be in the .UUE file that you create with a text editor (Notepad).

Make sense?

You can PM me anytime, or I can PM you my e-mail.

Thanks Wayfriend.

Still lost though! :?

Downloaded 7-zip but can't seem to open the file with it.

Tried downloading WinRAR but there are so so many sites offering it, i wasn't sure which to trust. Any ideas?

I tried it out. The text provided, saved as a .zip.uue, does indeed give a compressed file with a .zip in it. And the .zip contains a readme file and a folder. The readme says:
This is the Multiregion Menu for the 5000 Series LG DVD Player. Follow the directions exactly.

1.

Burn the folder 'RMTM0000' to a CD-R making sure that the directories stay in order.

2.

Insert the disk to your player

3.

Select desired region (0 for all regions)

Please distribute this file!!! LGRegionFree@yahoo.co.uk
It's kind've odd they just give you the text of the encoded file rather than a download of the zip, but it seems to be what it says it is.

Note: I use WinRAR, and have done for years. It pops up with a message when I start it, but never seems to reach its limit. Not sure where I got it, I think just an ordinary google search. This is the official site, though.

8O    You're a star Murrin!!!

Edit - job done! I really really really have to go on a computer basics course - even after opening that folder, it took me half an hour to work out how to save a data file onto cd. (Our last dvd player just needed about 10 buttons on remote pressed in a certain order. Grrrr)

7-Zip won't open a UUE-encoded file.

A simple free command line uudecode.exe can be found here: www.bastet.com/uue.zip. (If you know how to use a command line tool. (?))

You can also try downloading WinZip as a free evaluation, from here: www.winzip.com/prod_down.htm.

WinRAR can be found here: www.rarsoft.com/. Again, you would download this to evaluate it.

(NOTE: always virus scan anything you download before you execute or unpack it.)

BTW, for kicks, I uudecoded that file (with winzip, which I happen to have).

It decodes into a file called lg5000.zip. If you open up this zip file, it has two files in it, readme.txt and RMTM0000\Scarlet\kpjc19_1.dvd. The readme.txt tells you to burn the .dvd file to a CD.

If you do everything right, that's what you'll see.

Edit: Doh!

Hey, I talk to people all the time who have never used Command Prompt in their life, and would not know what to do with it if it got started accidently, were it not for the X in the corner.

Ah. I wasn't sure. I thought there was a good chance it was for the opposite reason. Doesn't think I know how to use a command line ... what an idiot ...

I don't even know where to find that on my computer, if it's even there...

A Command Prompt I believe is your terminal or command consol..its an application or window that lets you enter command lines that will allow you to create a script or perform actions that some applications perform, also it allows you to modify your system actions in some cases... if you dont know what a command line is I would not suggest using it until you know more about it..you can really screw up your system by simply typing in a / or something that doesnt belong in the command line.

I didnt realize there was a way to access firmware of a DVD Player using a text file burned to a cd... it might be simpler for you to just rerip the dvds using region 8 or leaving out the region coding alltogether so it just plays on any dvd player, simple procedure and no command lines. its taking the long way around i suppose but its easier than learning code. I have used the console on a couple occasions but the warning i was given while using these codes made me not want to use it unless it was absolutely necessary.

First: It's not a text file. It's a binary file.

Second: by reprogramming the DVD player, only have to burn the one disc, and it will play all movies. You can play them right out of the shrinkwrap. That's nicer than having to copy each DVD you buy.

I was under the impression that the file was to be saved using a text editor and then compressed? I thought binary was all ones and zeros? 01100100111000 and not actual letters? the reason i thought it was a text file was due to the name of the file.

{lg5000.zip.uue.TEXT}

anyway, im sure you are correct..but to a person who doesnt even know what a command line is, that could be risky business. I tentatively know what one is and I would still be reluctant to try this unless it is a reliable source or unless you can read malicious coding.

yeah I am/was/will be scared! But it worked it making the player multi-region, so I'm crossing toes and fingers that nothing else on my pc was screwed with! It was the downloading of the tools to do the job that worried me most.

SM: If your PC has an anti-virus, then you should scan any downloaded file before you execute it. Didn't I tell you that?

BW: UUE is a tool to take a binary file and convert it to a text file, in a way that you can later convery back to a binary file. It dates back to the time when you could not send binary files in the mail, or post them in newsgroups, or put them on the web. Using UUE, you could post the text version of the file in a newsgroup, or mail it, and then people could download it and convert it back.

(Of course, it was used for pr0n.)

Anyway, it's a text file that contains a zip file that contains a readme text file and a binary file to burn onto your cd. Make sense?

Now I'll really confuse you by saying that the text file was only 8KB, but when you UUE-decode it and then unZIP it, the binary file (to burn on your CD) is 5 MegaBytes!
