I guess it depends on the genus of your plants. 'Cause when I hear the words "pot" and "plant" together, my mind goes to one thing...
In the immortal words of Homer Simpson, "Mmmmm, brownies."
hehehehe. The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant.

"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Other than SRD, I really like Dennis Mckiernan's Mithgar series. It started out as a Tolkien clone but is much better than JRR's work imo. I also liked Terry Brooks first 4 Shannara books. I wasn't too impressed with the second Shannara series and haven't started the 3rd yet but the first set is a classic. I would very highly recommend both of these authors. They along with SDR have spoiled me as far as my fantasy reading goes.

Best Fantasy:
LOTR (Tolkien)
Book of the New Sun, Long Sun, Short Sun (Wolfe) (although technically science fiction)
Amber (Zelazny)
Anything by Kay
I've seen Wheel of Time and McCaffery books mentioned--didn't do anything for me, but I probably would have loved these books had a read them when I was 12.
Any recommendations for adult/literate fantasy on the level of the authors I've mentioned? Thanks--this board is a wonderful resource!

U've heard the A Song of Ice and Fire Series mentioned, right? George R. R. Martin is the best fantasy author I've encounted since SRD and Tolkien. Highly, highly recommend. A foray in2 Wolfe is next on my list (and I have been very tempted 2 try Kay, as well). If u like Amber u might consider going back 2 some of it's roots, namely E. R. Eddison. I consider Eddison 2 b the grandpappy of modern high fantasy, predating Tolk. His style is archaic and choppy in places but his worlds, characters, magics and swordplay r very engaging!

Wolfe
Wolfe is in a different league, even from Donaldson. Wolfe is to science fiction what Joyce is to 20th century fiction in general. That doesn't mean he's suited for everyone; some people enjoy Grisham, Robert Jordan, and Bud Light, while others prefer Joyce, Wolfe, and fine wine.danlo wrote:A foray in2 Wolfe is next on my list

I understand Severian...Gene Wolfe was one of the greatest champions 4 David Zindell's Neverness, my fav Sci-Fi of all time (click my www 2 go 2 my Zindell site, u r more than welcome 2 start a desperately need Wolfe topic in Gen. Sci-Fi there, btw...) so I've been meaning 2 return the favor by reading Wolfe...parts of the 2nd book in the Neverness series, The Broken God, stir up sharp memories of Finnegan's Wake...So if u like that sorta stuff, which I do, Neverness, The Broken God, The Wild and War in Heaven should b just ur cup o' tea...
(p.s. please don't mention Jordan and Bud-Lite in any post w/my name in it again!
