Tiger Woods
So, I turn on the tv yesterday to watch the final round of the Bay Hill golf thing, knowing Tiger was down 5 strokes, yet fully expecting him to win. Which he did, of course, in his usual amazing fashion.

The dude's simply awesome.

Being in the lead, but knowing that Woods is looking over your shoulder, is a definite psych-out.dANdeLION wrote:So, I turn on the tv yesterday to watch the final round of the Bay Hill golf thing, knowing Tiger was down 5 strokes, yet fully expecting him to win. Mick Weir? That must be the other guy Tiger came back from 5 down to beat. Yesterday he beat Sean O'Hair.Cleburne wrote:Mick Weir messed up big time to lose a 5 shot advantage , its nice to see the Tiger back it gives the PGA tour a boost. No one can draw the golf supporters like Tiger can.

Jack is also older. Woods has set more records already.Dromond wrote:Tiger is just unreal... I hesitated calling him the best ever, as Jack still has more majors, but last year convinced me. I have no doubt he's the greatest golfer ever, and that his list of major victories will grow longer than Jack's. And by a good margin, too.

Sorry I missed that final round - well, not that sorry, as it was a beautiful day to be at the park. But Tiger is definitely awesome, and I'll definitely be tuning into the Masters. I really only watch the Majors now, plus the Players Championship at Sawgrass.
I watched golf avidly from '96 to around 2004. Tiger was a big part of that: his "Tiger Slam" is...what superlatives are left to describe it? Maybe the "real" Grand Slam is only a matter of time for him. After all, he's got good knees to make his run now. A local sports columnist made the comparison that it would be like Bobby Orr coming back to hockey with a fresh set of knees, when he was still in his prime.
I seem to recall some stat I saw on the Golf Channel (back when I still had it) that said Jack was still much more consistent than Tiger in his top finishes. In his decade of dominance (the '70s) Jack either won or he was the guy you had to beat to win. Maybe Tiger is approaching that consistency now. I don't know. But I guess it won't matter too much that Jack was runner-up more times than Tiger, if Tiger ends up winning more times (and more Majors) than Jack.

Tiger has 66 major wins, Jack has 73, but the guy with the most is Sam Snead, with 82. It's scary to think, but Tiger could surpass Snead in 2 or 3 years.

Man, I forgot about Sam Snead, and Ben Hogan, for that matter...Ben taught me how to swing a club. (In a manner of speaking) My older brother had brought me to the driving range, gave me rudimentary lessons, and took me on my first course... naturally, I was horrible.dANdeLION wrote:Tiger has 66 major wins, Jack has 73, but the guy with the most is Sam Snead, with 82. At the turn, while grabbing a quick sandwich, he showed me a photo on the wall of Ben Hogan, in mid glorious swing, arms totally extended to a point that, well, it was perfect, quintessentially Hogan, and I was mesmerized, and at the same moment,I realized how to swing. I suddenly understood my Brother's lessons up to that point. The back nine was the most enlightening of my life. I'm not good at golf, but I learned more that day than I can explain.

What the odds that Tiger will win some Majors this year

A lie well told and told often enough,I'm damned if the truth will ever catch up with it!
The Mickelson/Woods pairing sure put on a show at the Masters yesterday. I thought the tournament would be in their hands, but wow, did they stumble badly towards the end - badly when considering the skill these two men possess. I mean, between them, they've got 6 green jackets. It was very strange to see Tiger Woods bogeying the last hole at a Major championship.
After those two fell off the chase, I was pulling for Angel Cabrera - and was shocked when he actually won! I have nothing against Chad Campbell, it's just that his game doesn't excite me as a viewer. I'm sorry, but he's like the model for the generic PGA tour pro. Kenny Perry, on the other hand, I did feel for at the end, when he lost the playoff to Cabrera. Being 48 years old, Perry could have become the oldest Major champion ever; you have to wonder if he'll ever get another chance like this again.

4 months and 10 days later, Tiger has 4 more major wins......I'm beginning to think my prediction was a bit too conservative. Of course, he could implode; he could have such a messed up personal life that it completely derails his professional life.....nah, that would never happen. The dude's image is spotless. I don't even know why I'd think such a thing.dANdeLION wrote:Tiger has 66 major wins, Jack has 73, but the guy with the most is Sam Snead, with 82.
