Thank you. I was looking for something more specific, but that's a good start for helping my understanding.Seareach wrote:A vicar is a priest. Church of England I think.
It comes from "vicarious" in the sense of a "substitute". What is the vicar substituting? I've figured that out for its use in Catholicism, but not for its use in the Church of England.Krazy Kat wrote:It comes from the word, 'vicarious'. Being a wordsmith Auleliel, I'm surprised you didn't know that!
I think this means that a vicar is a spiritual doctor.
If, as Seareach wrote, a vicar is simply a priest, why not simply use the word priest?
Sometimes what ought to be a simple word really confuses me.

From the point of view of a graduate and an alumnus of the upper school at St. Hilda's and St. Hugh's School, an Episcopalian school in Manhattan before they closed the upper school (my graduating class in 1986 had a total of 12 students, but the experience of giving the salutatorian address from the pulpit inside Manhattan's Cathedral of St. John the Divine and kissing the ring of the Bishop at our graduation ceremony, made it all worth it, even if I am not baptized into the CoE), I'll do my best to dredge up what little I remember...Auleliel wrote:If, as Seareach wrote, a vicar is simply a priest, why not simply use the word priest?

First of all, in the CoE, they are not going to call you a Priest unless they have to, because they are trying to distinguish themselves from the Catholic Church. That being said, both priests and vicars do in fact substitute in a sense for the grace and mercy of Jesus. The concept of intercession is problematic in both cases, considering that a literal reading of The Bible would suggest no go dash between is necessary or even allowed for a Christian. I seem to remember also that there is a distinction between a vicar and a parson based on the size of the congregation, although diocesan hierarchy escapes me.
Hope this helps.

me neither and I am curious as wellAuleliel wrote:I have never been called in for jury duty and am curious what it is like.
well...
let me rephrase that
I've been called twice
the first time, Beorn was still a nursing infant
the second time
since they use drivers licenses here
and my license is registered to our "permanent" address
instead of our "temporary" address here in Gator Town
I effectively live three hours away from the court house year round
I have been excused both times...

Perhaps not much of a surprise for those of you who know me, but I have a folder in my computer with literally gigabytes of informations about the world I have created... most of which no one, save for me, has ever seen. A lot of stuff, from cultures to customs to currency to religions to geography and history... even flora, fauna, gemstones, and so on... even a "census" where I collect characters I create for it (last I counted, there were more than 450 there)...
Sometimes I wonder if anyone else ever will see all that stuff...
