Great Interviewer/Poor interviewie

Post by drew »

CBC radio show, called 'Q'.
Jian Ghomeshi, the host, interviewed Billy Bob Thorton about his country band, the Boxmasters.

The interview went terribily wrong, mostly becasue Billy Bob Thorton was being an absolute prick.
Yet the host was able to keep it professional.

Luckily this radio show videotapes their interviews and posts them on Youtube.

Watch for yourself.

why was bbt being such an ass? i also was struck by
how well the interviewer handled bbt's weirdness.

This interview was LIVE -coast to coast- on the radio.

I actually pulled my truck over and listened to the whole thing.
it's too bad they didn't play the song on youtube. The musicians did a good job, but the background music to a country song is fairly boring.

Jian G is being hailed as a great radio personality now because he was able to keep his cool.

Oh, and for the record, it wasn't 6am, it was about 930.

It took me some time to work out what went wrong in this interview. BBT asked the producer of the Q show that there be no mention of BBT's Hollywood career. But during the introduction one of the very first things host Jian did was mention BBT's cinematic career. At this point in the video, I can see BBT in the background lift his head toward the ceiling as if to say, "Oh Lord, why me???" Afterward he was completely uncooperative with the interviewer until he finally got a chance to blow up over the mention. At least BBT didn't just walk out - but maybe he should have in order to save himself from his own unfortunate "gravy" comment which occurred toward the end.

I predict that BBT and his band will return to the US and be greeted as heroes.

BBT is an ass, and has always been one. Back before he wasted his talent, he was actually a pretty good writer and director. I was lucky enough to attend a private screening with him for One False Move, and was absolutely stunned by what a jackass he was.

8) cool. add another thing to the tally of things you and i can agree on.

what an ass to request that there be no mention of what he does for a freakin living in the first place. cause no matter how decent his band is (haven't heard em) bbt's only marginally adequate as a musician. (imo)
god forbid he redirect the conversation back to the music poLITEly insteaduh just bein' a jackass.

I was going to give Thornton the benefit of the doubt - that maybe he was just having a bad day. We all have bad days. But I guess this behaviour is a pattern for him.

I think bbt was just going for attention. If he didn't want the focus to be on his acting career, letting the two sentences about it slide would have been more effective than making a big deal about it. I didn't even notice the interviewer mention it until bbt made a big stink about it.
