In a few minutes, I get to explain fractions to a co-worker.
Otherwise, everything here is swell.

That reminds me, a few days ago I decided to do a long division instead of just punching it into the calculator...and I was rustier than I thought.aliantha wrote:In a few minutes, I get to explain fractions to a co-worker.Otherwise, everything here is swell.
Yes, I'm forgetting basic math skills. Next, I'll be sweating in panic over subtraction...

Why do you think I had the firm buy me a calculator?
Anyhow, it was easier than I thought it was going to be. The issue was converting rupees to dollars on a hotel bill. She didn't realize she had to use all six or eight decimal places of the conversion factor in order to get it to come out right.

I'm sorry, holmes. I feel for ya. Hate it when that happens. What was the event, if I can ask?Auleliel wrote:I organized and ran an event in my res hall tonight, and only four people came.At least the four people who came seemed to have fun. It doesn't quite justify the amount of work I've put into it though.

Today was well. I finally got a frame for my print of Hans Holbein's Ambassadors, which I had acquired in London in 2006. It's going to look very good, I think, in a thin black frame and 3 mattes I picked out with the framer. The actual framing will take two weeks, and it cost a good bit (80$), but it's more than worth it to me.
Also need to get new strings for my guitar, as well as glue its bridge back on. The bloody thing...

There was free food--chips and such. The event was dodgeball, which in previous years has been very popular. It was my contribution to the res hall association's week of events (I'm secretary), and we've been advertising for weeks. Oh well.Wyldewode wrote:Offer free food. . . that usually helps draw college students!Auleliel wrote:I organized and ran an event in my res hall tonight, and only four people came.At least the four people who came seemed to have fun. Activities Programmer for the village I lived in for a decade at UF's graduate and married student housing was my most recent paid position. I organized well received events, like the annual Thanksgiving dinner that had 300 attendees each year, to busts like the Valentines night social for couples only (not bringing the kids was hard on the married students, although we were focusing on the single grads with that event. Unfortunately, apparently it is difficult to get "couples" to attend from the students who are single.

From my perspective, I'll say don't take it to heart. All sorts of reasons could have prompted the poor turn out. There may have been a conflicting activity somewhere off campus, or even by another organization on campus, that drew more participants. It may have been the timing in the semester. It may have been the weather, if it was overcast or some such. There are multiple reasons.
Should you decide to organize such an activity again, and want to run ideas by me, feel free to PM me at any time...

our son's gf left him a few days ago. took the baby back to Vegas. so we are at different levels here.
but the girl was intolerable. the virtual dark cloud. in the end it was better that she leave. she was trying to be unhappy here.
still sucks that i have two grand children i can't be an everyday part of their life.
julie is really hurting.
but we soldier on.

That sucks, Sarge. Hugs to you and Julie and your son.
I had such great plans for today. I was going to get up early and read the paper, then buy some plants for the deck, get a haircut, and clean the house. Instead I got up late, discovered I didn't have a paper (which often happens when I get up late -- I think one of my neighbors steals it if I'm not Johnny-on-the-spot to pick it up, arrgh), finished a knitting project that's been annoying the heck out of me, and spent way too much time online. Ah well, there's always next weekend...
