Cheerful is right. Question: if it isn't dark and brooding, is it still metal?

I'm not enough of a heavy metal connoisseur to have a strong opinion either way, but such an ebullient sound from a metal band is quite unusual.

Power metal, particularly from mainland Europe for some reason, does tend to be more upbeat than other sub-divisions of metal. 'Hunters and Prey' is about as chirpy as I've ever heard it get though (and, surprisingly enough, I believe Angra are South American rather than European).

Personally, I don't require metal to be grim or aggressive. Like most genres of music, literature, or any other form of 'art', metal is capable of more than it seems to be. Including happiness.

That song usually makes me smile, hence me listening to it today. It's been my source of reinvigoration for continuing work. I don't own much Angra; I should probably buy more...

When the laptop we were using before we got this one died last summer, I lost my copy of Jon Anderson's Olias of Sunhillow with it. I knew we had back up CDs of the mp3s somewhere, but search as we could, they remained hidden.

This evening, I finally stumbled upon 30 CDs of mp3s. And there, on the 20th CD I opened to transfer music to this laptop, was the entire album of Olias. So, at least for now...

...all is right with the world.

Since I first heard 'Land of Confusion' by Disturbed, I've been saying to people that something in the melody reminds me faintly of Phil Collins. Tonight I found out it's actually a cover of a Genesis b-side!

People say the devil has the best tunes. Sometimes they seem to be right. Or if not the devil (being the agnostic I am), at least those who might once have been conveniently classified as in his service.

I've discovered the Carol of the Bells, thanks to its appearance in an episode of Quantum Leap. At first I simply couldn't believe it was meant to be a Christmas carol. As it played behind Sam Beckett's dialogue, what immediately came to mind was The Wicker Man and its haunting vocal chants.

Upon checking out this 'carol' I discovered the melody is actually a pagan piece of some sort that was appropriated, like so many pagan traditions, by the Christian church. That explains the slightly eerie minor-chord melancholy building to exultant seething harmony.

And yes, I've never in my life heard this carol. Laugh and you get a slap.

I'll ask around. Maybe it's not that common in the UK.

In other musical news, I'm getting into shakuhachi/koto music. For years I've had a vague fondness for that distinctive Japanese bamboo flute/twangy thing sound. Not enough to actually find out what it was though.

My interest this time was caught by 'Kouga Ninpou Chou', the theme tune from Basilisk. It combines rock riffing and instruments with occasional bursts of shakuhachi (bamboo flute). I think it works really well, so I looked around to see if there's more. Unfortunately, I've yet to find any.

But it did prompt me to listen to the real thing - that is, more traditional shakuhachi music, often accompanied on the koto (that twangy zither thing).

I'm not a weeaboo. I just like some sounds. Pan pipes do it too.

Loved, loved, loved performing this song. One of my favorite pieces at the holiday concerts with choir.

Apparently it's something to do with swallows and good luck, but I've yet to find a recording of it anywhere.
