Your Own Way...

Post by Orlion »

All righty, often I hear such comments as "if there's a god, why does he allow such and such to happen, or why doesn't blabady blah..." I know I've had these thoughts and am sure others here have as well. So, in this thread, consider yourself God!!!(or godlike, g-d, etc. if that's less offensive :P ) You now can control the mechanics of the universe and enact those changes you think the previous occupant of the job should have done but didn't. But there's a price to be paid... consider in your answers what would be gained by your laws of the universe and what would be lost from the present state of affairs.

Or maybe you would rather play the part of the Accuser in these proceedings, the sky's the limit (unless you remove that 8) ) Keep in mind, this is speculative, even if it provides prospective on our mortal state, so if offense is inadvertantly incurred, take it out on the neighbor's dog (this last part brought to you by the Association For Shutting Up Neighbor's Dogs)

I would stop religion for a start; society can do without belief in a god and have morals without fears of reprisal. Then again, how the hell would I stop religion without reprisals? Oh, the irony.

Not being entirely facetious here.....

I'd make stupidity painful. Well, more accurately, willful ignorance. As in, not BOTHERING to learn about something before trying to assert authority or expertise on it....like a high school dropout trying to fight vaccination laws because they think it gave their kid autism, DESPITE scientific evidence to the contrary. Or musicians/actors who try to pass themselves off as experts on the problems facing Africa. I'd also apply this to obnoxious idiots who have never so much as PLAYED a sport in an organized manner, but act like they could manage/coach a team better. Also, elitism...example #1...PhD in sociology, shows sneering disdain for people who punch a clock, like mechanics, plumbers, etc., thinking his education and intelligence, and/or money, make him inherently superior to them. Conversely, #2, the Factory line worker who resents anyone who has a higher paying job "just cause they went to some special school, damn geeks taking all the best jobs". I've met both of these sort of people. Can't stand either of them. I'd make every government a meritocracy.....see William W. Johnstone's "Tri-States Philosophy" from the "Ashes" series, or the Freehold of Grainne in Michael Z. Williamson's "Freehold" and "The Weapon" novels.....btw, Freehold is available for free online at Baen books website, excellent read.

Considering all the b/s I have to hear all day I would remove the most important glitch in the creation of men - that you can't close your ears.

I would move everyone's perspective of the 'half full/empty glass' a little bit lower so everyone's glass looked a bit fuller.

I would also make sure that humanity's sense of wonder grew and matured with age instead of disappearing with age.

I wouldn't change anything. As Cybrweez said, Bruce Almighty. We can't choose to do good if we can't choose to do evil.

I'd turn myself into billions of independently-thinking, sophisticated apes and ask myself several pretty darned searching questions about whether or not I existed!

Why, thankee Stonemaybe! Yes, thought I'd take another shufty at the Watch, see how it was getting on...been an eventful year, I've moved to Crete, teaching English. I hear the weather's still lovely back home though! ;)

How can you stop something that attempts to explain the things that materialism can't explain? To me it is as impractical as a suggestion to stop science.
George Washington warned against that very attitude. Are you familiar with his remarks on religion and morality from his Farewell Address?

Materialism works, until you discover that it doesn't work.

Hey, a fellow English teacher abroad! :)

Interestingly, proposals here would all result in a different kind of hell. That's why those of us in Christian-land are taught to pray "Thy will be done" because the alternative is "My will be done", which is the precise formula for hell.

No human proposal can result in a paradise or utopia. They always leave out dealing with that pesky thing we call human nature. God did the best, and perhaps only, job that could be done. It is up to us to screw it up. God does not 'send' us to hell. We do that for ourselves. That's why He's trying as hard as He can to save us from ourselves, while leaving us our free will to reject His efforts.
