Raising her brows towards Ellys, as she pauses in taking another sip of wine, the bard turns and inquires of the barmaid, "Have they now? Are they all well? Have they met their schedule for return, or have they been gone longer than expected? A score of years sounds a bit excessive to have been away. I mean, they would have left before I was even born...

...and just who are we talking about, my friend?"

Ellys looks surprised for moment, then explains..."The Weavers of the Ebon Web. A group of them was caught trying to blackmail Grand Duke Nytheltyr, they had stolen the soul of his son as leverage."

Weavers of the Ebon Web....there is a name you recognize. A school, a cult, a guild.....of necromancers. At the highest levels, it is led by wizards who worship the Vile Lady, and her clerics. It has been though exterminated many times, in all lands over the years, even plaguing the Veracinean Imperium long ago. the 20 years ago refers to an attempt to displace the soul of the king and have his body possessed by a controlled undead spirit.

Vynarkus stops right before firing his blast as the bartender gets in the way. A scowl crosses his face, then vanishes as he hears the news.

The bard processes this information, then slowly nods. Necromancers who deal with undeads. She hopes Gagror stays with the party for awhile yet.

"Thank you for seeking me out to inform me, Ellys. I appreciate your kindness. Is it known if they have any current mischief in mind?" Then turning towards the warlock she asks, "You weren't thinking of trying your blast on the javelin inside, were you? Doesn't the javelin need to be thrown to activate its own magic?"

"Are there any knoown connections between these Weavers of the Ebon Web and whatever this unnamed destroyer force is? This timing seems too coincidental."

Suddenly, Marrik and Laurel get a strange look on their faces, as if they had heard something......a glance out into the common room shows a few other folk with the same expression on their faces.

Reaching into her pocket and bringing out a kerchief, Laurel excuses herself from the party and finds a secluded corner. Rubbing at her ears, she shakes her head a little, yet whatever was missing was still gone. Feeling a little ill-at-ease by the unexpected silencing of something taken for granted, yet being unable to place her finger on it, Laurel wishes for her hand harp to strum in order to sooth herself. Having left her backpack in her room before coming to join the others, she expels a little energy and calls her harp to her.

Once her harp is in her hand, she absentmindedly plucks and strums, humming softly to herself in between bites of food and sips of wine, while listening to further conversation.

Although Vynarkus failed to recognize any difference in the surrounding noise, he is perceptive enough to tell from the expressions of others that something has happened, and tries to determine what it is another way.

A sudden cry from outside draws everyone's attention....A figure of some kind is visible, flying up in the sky.

As people head out into the streets to better see rather than lean out of windows, it becomes clear it is descending. People outside now start trying to get inside again.

Beauregard is unable to maintain the speed to keep up with the press heading back in...he is knocked aside and down when a coughing spell overwhelms him.

"Beauregard!!" Laurel cries out, as she sees the halfling stumble. Running over to him, she calls out, "Led! Marrik! Vynarkus! Could you please help me bring Beauregard back inside?"

Vynarkus heads over to Laurel and Beau, keeping his Detect Magic going and constantly scanning the surroundings for any sign of something coming towards him or in the area around the flying person.

Led scans the sky and the flying... thing. Looking around for a good place to go to catch the thing as it comes lower...

Applicable skill check (knowledge geography I have) to pick a rooftop or ledge or something I can get on, so that I can do a running jump and claw it as it goes by.

Seeing Led preoccupied and not knowing where Marrik had gone, Laurel reached under Beauregard's shoulders and attempted to pull him upright. Looking towards Vynarkus she asked, "Could you help me support him inside to the common room? If we find he can not make it on his own, do you think you could carry him inside a find a place to set him down?" At the warlock's nod, the bard worked with him to support the halfing inside and set him on the hearthstone near the fire.

"Stay with him, if you will, Vynarkus. I would like a view of what approaches if I can find a free window or doorway." With that, Laurel found her way to a crowded window and tried to see what was landing.

[ooc]also spot and appropriate knowledge checks, with Collector of Stories applied, if applicable please[/ooc]

The creature's stooping speed quickly make it's true nature obvious to all....it is a Manticore. More accurately, a VERY LARGE specimen of Manticore. A glint off something in one ear flickers briefly, before the creature disappears...only to reappear as it executes a fly-by snatching of the halfling! It quickly weaves off between buildings, heading off to the north!

Vynarkus runs (well, moves as fast as he can, possibly a charge) after the Manticore, hoping to stay in range of his Eldritch Spear, and blasts the thing as many times as possible before it gets out of range, then starts running flat out after it, possibly attempting a quick mount on a horse if he passes one. If that succeeds, he gallops after it as fast as conditions allow, concentrating on blasting it more despite the distraction of being bounced around on the horse.

[ooc]I may be trying several things I cannot do, but I will not allow Vynarkus to become the sort of person who does not attempt to save a companion who is being kidnapped.[/ooc]

Vynarkus manages to connect with one Eldritch Blast as the manticore weaves its way out of town, headed north. Marrik dashes back inside, grabbing all of his gear and calling for everyone to do the same, before heading for the north gate. Skyseeker quickly follows, javelin in hand and her few possessions bagged and slung over her shoulder. Yurian and his companions shout that they must stay here, lest the main force returning from raids overwhelm the town.

Vynarkus is carrying all of his gear on him, so he runs to where the horse Jauron gave him [ooc]I think he did...[/ooc] is stored, gets on, and heads for the gate, hopefully managing to watch the Manticore at the same time.

"Ellys, looks like I'm leaving in a hurry again!" the bard calls to the barmaid. "I'll grab what I can, but will you kindly store what I leave behind? It won't be much, but I fear I won't have time to grab everything..."

At Ellys' nod, Laurel makes her way upstairs and hurriedly throws her things together, then runs out to the stables to distribute her items among Hardy and Garvin's packs and saddle bags. When she comes to her chain mail shirt and leather armor, which had been replaced by the mithril shirt, she brings them to Ellys. "It looks like I managed to grab everything after all. I don't think I'll need either of these anymore. If anyone expresses an interest, sell them, and keep a balance for me for whenever I may again pass through town."

Handing the mail shirt and leather armor to the other woman, she gives her a hug, a quick smile, then returns to Hardy and Garvin. Draping Hardy's lead over her shoulder, she mounts Garvin and follows the others to the North Gate.

I don't know what good I can do until I get some rest, but I would rather travel weary and stay with the group, then refresh myself and try to tag after a cold trail, she thinks to herself, stifling a yawn...

Led, who is hiding on the roof of a building to the south of where Beau fell, curses when he sees the monster turn north. He quickly climbs back down from his now-useless ambush point, races into the inn to grab his scribe bag and his already packed travel bag (Heshic ways are still deeply imbedded in the young man), and sprints out to the stable.

He glances at the sky to make sure the monster is still visible, and to confirm direction, then dashes inside to saddle his mount. He confirms that there is still a Heshic bull roarer at the top of his saddle bags, then stows the rest of his gear below it.

He stops at the stable boy on his way out, and holds up a Gold Bow to him, catching his full attention.

"Others with my group will be here soon, in as much of a hurry as me. Tell them which direction I went, and tell them to follow as quickly as they can. Tell them that I'll go on ahead to keep eyes on the monster. I'll signal them in the Heshic fashion when I can. Tell them to signal me in the same way if they need direction to me."

He tosses the coin to the lad, and then gallops off after the Manticore.

[ooc] -

Ride checks to keep up with it. (speed 60 x 5 from the RUN feat)
Survival / knowledge (geography) / knowledge (nature) checks to find places where I can take short cuts to gain on it (or at least to predict places I might lose ground, and avoid them).
