Haruchai Women and Society

Post by Wheelwash Whitecap »

So much of the Chronicles include the Haruchai and the Haruchai history, but only regarding the male of the species. Very little has been said of the female species other than they are at home in the mountains.

Are the women as hearty as the men? What are their children like? etc.etc.

The theme that comes to my mind is that it is similar of the Greek Spartan Society. Maybe that is where SRD got his motivation for them?

I think that by the time we get to the end, SRD will probably give us a glimpse of the Haruchai life , as he has already stated that these books tie everything together. Too mant times has this question been asked already, for our favorite author to pass up this topic in one of his novels, Wheelwash----------------H

I don't think there are any Haruchai females. I think they mate with mountain goats. That's why they're so stubborn and hard-headed.

I remember Haruchai women being mentioned briefly, but I don't recall what was said about them. Someone else probably will.

I think Bannor mentions something when he leaves TC and Foamfollower at Landsdrop and returns home to his people in the mountains.

Brinn also makes an empassioned speech concerning the colour of the haruchai women's skin during the 2nd chronicles, shortly after he and Cail are seduced by the song of the merewives ...

If the Haruchai women were so desirable, why did the men leave the mountains?

I bet they were henpecked and their wife could beat them up anytime.

From the descriptions given, however sketchy, I suspect that even if we do wind up meeting Haruchai women they will be similar to the men.

I also suspect, guys, that we don't dare date them--they would probably break us.

Whether that is a good thing or not I leave for you to decide for yourselves.

I would suspect that the relationship between the women and the men, based on the impression we get from the books for the male Haruchai anyhow, is they probably live a tribal life.My thought is that the female Haruchai would probably be in the" provider" role, leaving the men to the perfecting of their battle skills and philosophies ,as well as the training and indoctrination of the children to their belief system. My mind tells me that the men and women are impassionate towards each other in a group setting, but behind the veil, they harbor a very passionate and committed relationship in the home. Also it would lead me to believe that obtaining a female"mate" is a contested event ,showcasing the skills of eligible males .This being said, and as aforementioned, the women may also contest each other for the "right of attainment" of the most skilled or prolific male. The women most likely IMO, hunt, fish, maintain the home etc. It may be pointed out also that the women may be held in equal status to the male and that they most definitely would not be a passive mate in any case.I believe also that their interpersonal relationship as a joined couple, would echo the interaction of Lord Shetra and Lord Verement, but without the "she was chosen by the Ranyhyn,I am unworthy " attitude that plagued those two individuals in the Illearth War

I think it most interesting that female Haruchai still remain an enigma, especially considering that the Chronicles are littered with strong female characters, serving the Land alongside men. Indeed, for almost every male character, there is a female counterpart.

Covenant and Linden, Elena and Mhoram, Quaan and Amorine, Sunder and Hollian, the First of the Search and Foamfollower, Chant and Infelice, Atiaran and Trell - I could go on and on. (and frequently do, haha.)

It all leads me to believe that Haruchai women, when and if we finally meet them, will be just as noble, courageous, unflinching, uncompromising, severe, and damn frustrating as Haruchai men!

Methinks they will be hen peckers.
