Dead Kevin's Powers

Post by jacob Raver, sinTempter »

I searched for prev. topic on it...no luck.

What powers did dedKev use against despElena in IW?
If he used Earthpower, does it make sense that a dead spirit can do this?
Or, can one use Earthpower against another Earthpower'ian? I mean, since the Earthpower spoke to Berek I would assume it's sentient, right? Then why would it allow dedKev to use such powers? Really, wouldn't the clash between dedKev, being now unLaw, and the Staff OF Law, be more of a test of invisible power, like magnetic fields, more than the mountain shaking, peak braking battle that HT witnessed from afar? Wouldn't it be more a test of applied will? Why would dedKev have any actual powers? I understand partly why despElena believed dedKev would hold power, but in the physical, does it really make sense?

I would ultimately like to take the easy way out and say that we don't know, but instead, some speculation:

Dead Kevin told Elena that he was "consumed by the Illearth Stone". This leads me to believe that his "power" whilst fighting Elena had its source in the Illearth Stone. It seems that Foul was able to use this Stone to impart at least some powers to his warped minions such as the army of ghouls, Dead Kevin, and Elena Foulwife.

Absolutely.

But to solve the first half of the mystery: what powers did despElena believe dedKev would have when she summoned him?

I don't know where the quote is at, but she believed that Dead Kevin would be very powerful due to his "consumption of despair". Her reasoning was that Kevin unleashed such great power when he thought the RoD would be enough to end Foul, how much more would he be able to release if only he had another shot him, after knowing that the RoD was not enough.

The source of his power, she believed, would probably be a combination of his Lore, Earthpower, and the ultimate consumption of his despair.

Ahh. Well, for the movies I think the power of the Lord's would be depicted as bolts of blue force.
Donaldson, TPTP, 1988, pg 82 wrote: As the acid struck the stone, it erupted. In lightless incandescence, it burned at the mountain rock like the flare of a dark sun. Tohrm cried out in pain, and the stone's agony howled under Mhoram's feet. He leaped forward. With Treyor and Amatin beside him, he called blue Lords-fire from his staff and flung it down against the vitriol.
I think Dead Kevin's power would also be shown as a blue force or flame, though but a shade of the power a living Lord could produce. (It is here the Elena makes her mistake - assuming that Kevin's power would have grown with his defeat and death, rather than waned.)

Now, once Kevin had been mastered by Foul and the Illearth stone, his power could be changed, warped to the sickly, fluorescent green of the Stone. So I guess I envisage his battle with Elena as a contest of fire and force; her's stridently, powerfully sky-blue, boosted by the Staff of Law - his a rotten, leprous green of the Stone.
