Do you think Trell ever forgave Covenant?

Post by JD »

Do you think Trell ever forgave Covenant? After Covenant raped his daughter, was responsible for the death of his granddaughter, and Trell's wife was killed trying to summon Covenant back to the land, then Trell tried to involk the Ritual of Desecration. After all that disaster could he forgive Covenant? I doubt that I could, even though he eventually saved the land. Trell was destroyed but what happened, it literally drove him insane. I

Neither Covenant, nor himself, nor anything or anybody else (that is my understanding of what makes Desecration possible!); and perhaps especially not Atiaran, because she did forgive Covenant.

Trell has perhaps the ultimate inverse of Tan-Haruchail that is seen anywhere in the mythos.

I can't think of any reason to believe that Trell forgave Covenant.

In Trell's eyes, it was Covenant who made him break his Oath of Peace, which he could never forgive himself for doing, and since he couldn't forgive himself he couldn't forgive Covenant. When Covenant meets dead Trell in Andelain in TWL, Trell never speaks to him. This always struck me, as though even in Death, Trell could not get past what the Unbeliever had done to him and his family.

I don't think there was any way Trell could forgive Covenant or himself. What strikes me is the the image of the strong, loving father and husband that Trell was before TC entered his life.

Absolutely not! Why on Land would he?

I don't know... Maybe because his Oath of Peace requires it...

Then again, I don't think TC ever wanted Trell to forgive him. He wanted to make amendments, not to receive absolution.

Yes. People kept forgiving him, and he found it painful.

Yes :(

Broken Oath, Broken mind...

I've said it before, I liken Trell to Kevin...both succumbing to their despair...

*winks at Fist* ;)

...and with exactly the same result. A Ritual of Desecration.

HOw could Atiaran forgive Cov, wouldn't that destroy the supposed reasoning for her trying to summon him? If that is true, then the reason she summonded him was because she also loved him and wanted him...

No, and neither could Trell forgive himself.

I say Trell did forgive Covenant. Isn't his forgiveness what made him find the Power that Preserves. Trell is a giant in my eyes!
