Dune is one of the best Sci-fi books ever - I must have read it a dozen times. It is awsome, I hope you enjoy it. It was made into a film (an interesting film) in the 80's with Sting and Captain Piccard amongst others in.
Please let us know how you like it.

The Author's Name

Post by danlo »

Dune was written by Frank Herbert--it is a fantastic book! The movie, however, may let u down in some ways. There r also a # of sequels 2 it including: Dune Messiah, Children of Dune and God Emporer of Dune, and some later books written by his son Brian and others such as: House Atreides and House Harkonen. Other books I love by Herbert include: Whipping Star, Soulcatcher, The Santaroga Barrier and Hellstrom's Hive. I am going 2 start a Frank Herbert topic on my Neverness website: Ahira's Hangar (go membership list and click my www. 2 go there) if u like Dune and Covenant u'll love Neverness--Here's what the London Times had 2 say about it:
"Spectacular world-making, a kind of reverse-coin Dune, that carries sudden alarms of invention to give it all great immediacy"

There are actually two films. I have only seen the one with Sting in it. I can't remember for certain, but I believe it is the other one that is considered a better movie.

There was discussion about the movies on the Dune thread on the old board, if you are interested.

About the other "movie"

Post by danlo »

Techincally it was a made for the Sci-Fi channel miniseries, later put out on video & DVD--in it's entirety--it's fairly long...imo, it is much better--the only big let down are the Harkonens who r nasty--but not as nasty and gross as in the book or in the DeLaurentis movie. But in all fairness as I said 2 a friend as we entered the theater "Dune is WAY 2 complex 2 even begin 2 capture any real gist of it in a 2 & 1/2 hr movie" That being said, aside from ornithopters, Navigators (I'm VERY particular about those) and the precieved distances btween the planets I was pretty impressed w/the Klye McGlaughlin Dune. Of course the miniseries was better--the more time u have 2 explain what's going on, elaborate and pull 2gether the details the more "spiritual" the feel is and the more sense the celluliod makes.

personally I like the David Lynch version with Sting and Kyle McLachlan much more - although it wandears away from the story quite often it captures the feeling of the books much better - the Dune miniseries for me is just a rather bad - althouh almost word for word - interpretation with garish costumes and bad acting

Dune

Post by Bannor »

I love the book (and subsequent sequels and prequels), and it's very difficult to make Dune into a movie. The first movie had a much better opening scene (the cut version that's widely available): the uncut version is rare, and though it contains a lot more material, the opening is full of animation (not the glamorous intro as the widely released version).
The second movie (miniseries) was more faithful to the film, but not nearly as glamorous as the first one. Better effects in the 2nd one.
The first movie excelled in the soundtrack. Toto did most of the music and ends with a gorgeous song.
Still no way to get everything Herbert put into his books into a movie.
"Do you have a wife?"
"At one time."
"What happened to her?"
"She has been dead."
"How long ago did she die?"
"Two thousand years."

Dune: special edition

Post by Loredoctor »

I thought I'd just mention that I just bought a special edition (DVD) of the 80s Dune film. It's got 40 minutes extra footage, and is fantastic. Check it out.

It's been soooo long since I read the Dune series that I've forgot most of it. This, and a mention of the books at the Hangar, have inspired me to put it next in line on my reading list, after ASOS. :)

Went out and picked up Dune and Dune Messiah. Kind of odd reading about half remembered characters after so many years. :)

I love those book a minutes! You've seen the ones for the two TCTC?

And I think Dune is an excellent read, though I got lost somewhere in the later sequels...think I stalled out somewhere around Chapterhouse Dune...

I get lost in Heretics and Chapterhouse too. Such incredible stuff in some ways - particularely, and obviously, the Honored Matres. But I'm not very smart in the ways of politics, so a lot of the conversations in those last books send me running for chocolate ice cream.

The original book, however, is, imo, among the best books ever written. Not just fantasy/sci-fi either, but in any field.

I'm reading Dune Messiah, and am about 1/3 the way through. In what appears to be contrary to the norm, I like it better than Dune so far. I like plots with political intrigue. (Probably comes from being a Political Science major  )

Frank Herbert's Children of Dune, a review

Post by danlo »

Frank Herbert's Children of Dune

Just watched the 1st half, 2 more hours 2 go. I must say I'm very, very impressed so far. I've only seen about 4 scenes of Frank Herbert's Dune (the Sci-Fi channel miniseries) and liked them alot (even tho Baron Harkonnen wasn't fat or ugly enuf). Now I want 2 rush back 2 the video store and watch the entire miniseries. I have a feeling, however, that this is a better overall production. I like Arakeen, the much larger "scope" of the distances btween planets, the navigators and the Ornithopters much better than what was depicted the DeLaurentis movie. Paul and Alia are much more "spiritually" believable 2...The Sandworms are just as good, if not better. Yes it's long but it does incredible justice 2 the book, so far. The twins are very sophisticated, wild and spooky. The only things I liked better in the movie Dune (aside from Harkonnen) were Patrick Stewart as Gurney Halleck and Dean Stockwell as the Dr/Traitor, dang I can never remember his name and lost my books a long time ago.

Part 2:
On the whole I was very impressed, they were some great effects, especially as far as speed, The stoner burner, worm-riding, fighting and the "tigers" and then there were some so-so, but still original Star Wars quality, effects. They did an admirable job with all the political machinations, the mad prophet and Alia's madness. If there were any glaring problems w/this movie it might b in the efforts 2 convey how much time has really passed from beginning 2 end. Since the 1st quarter of the movie is, basically, Dune Messiah we r probably looking at 20 years worth of Arrakis' history.

Alice Krige was outstanding as Jessica...and Susan Sarandon played the House Corrino Matron with a nice evil glitter. Daniela Amavia's dynamic Alia held the movie 2gether until James McAvoy (Leto) and Jessica Brooks (Ghanima) took over as the twins. McAvoy did a pretty amazing job! Here's an interesting radio chat Jessica Brooks (what a babe! grrr..) did with Sci Fi. com: Ghanima Atredies

I just picked up a hardcover copy for $10 at a used book store around me. I've been looking for years for a good deal-I read it just before I gave my softcover version (missing the cover :) ) to my friend, so I wasn't in a hurry to find it. The sleeve and book are in great shape...gonna give er a go again (umm, I think this would be the fourth time) after my fourth reread of the Chrons I'm doin now.

Yay! 8O 8) :lf:
