Favourite Witchery Movies
I love horrors, scare flicks and occult stuff. Witch movies often struggle with mediocrity but even the formulaic ones can sometimes come up with the goods.
I am a BIG fan of the much-maligned Blair Witch Project, but others I liked over the years include Spellbinder (Kelly Preston, Rick Rossovich).
Even The Craft was reasonably decent considering it was aimed at an average audience.
Any other suggestions?

Hi, Landwaster! I'm surprised that you say The Blair Witch Project is much-maligned. I had thought it had been widely acknowledged as a groundbreaking movie. I certainly thought it was a unique piece of filmmaking, and I mean that in the strictest sense of the word: it's one of a kind that cannot be repeated. Imitated, definitely. Blair Witch was a movie that launched a thousand cliches, judging by how many "real tv" programs out there have copied the Blair Witch "look".
I think it's the sequel, Blair Witch 2: Book Of Shadows, that has been unfairly condemned. I saw it in theatres, and I was surprised at how good it was. The filmmakers knew they had to come up with something fresh and different, while remaining true to the creepiness of the original, and I think they achieved that. Just because the sequel had a decent budget (vs. the original) doesn't automatically mean it's bad!
Carrie (the original movie with Sissy Spacek) scared the hell out of me when I watched it on TV as a kid. The final scene was killer!
Around the same time, I caught The Exorcist on TV. (Must have been horror movie month.) The image of Linda Blair as the gruesome demon-child is permanently burned into my mind. It just shows that you don't need fancy effects to be scary;a damned good makeup job works just fine.
My all-time favorite horror flick is Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. It's really a Kubrick film disquised as a "horror" movie, so it tends to annoy Stephen King fans and horror movie fans alike. But if you're a Kubrick fan, The Shining is a feast for the eyes.

Yeah I mean that a lot of people didn't like BWP, they're usually the ones that would rather a Nightmare on Elm Street or such film.
I will forever sing the praises of BWP, but have to disagree with you on Book Of Shadows. I was aghast. Hated it. Sorry
Shining never fully got me in, either. However I DID love Carrie! Exorcist is also one of my favourites.

Oooh, the exorcist scared me so badly!
The blair witch project was awesome! Though the next day we went cross country skiing in the woods to our cabin... we had to ski out when it was pitch black and my dad insisted on not using flashlights... eeee.
I scare very easily... but I still love horror flicks.

Anything that is actually scary and not just gruesome. I liked The Ring and I loved The Blair Witch Project, even if I did get motion sickness watching it.

I really like The Sixth Sense. Even without the "surprise ending." (Which surprised me anyway.
) Contemplating what that little boy had lived with his entire life, not having anyone who could help him... Damn!!

Oooh Yeah! The Ring was good too. I want to see Ringu, but haven't gotten around to it yet.
The house of 1000 corpses is TERRIBLE! I got about half way through it before I just couldn't take it anymore. Yes, it's scary. But it's not a good kind of scary. It makes you feel dirty to watch it. But I guess what could you expect from Rob Zombie.

Thank God. I thought I was the only person in the world who enjoyed this movie.Matrixman wrote:I think it's the sequel, Blair Witch 2: Book Of Shadows, that has been unfairly condemned. Old favorites... Pumpkinhead, Superstitions, Witchboard, Evil Dead.
New... Stir of Echoes, The Ring, Blair Witch
...and House of 1000 Corpses was great. Yes, it helps if you're a fan of Rob Zombie, because you get to see some common themes in his music represented visually. However, you have to keep in mind that this movie was basically one big homage from Rob to the genre. I've heard rumors he's working on another movie, and I'm really looking forward to it.

This WUTHERING HEIGHTS is another remake of Emily Bronte's book. The half-mad Heathcliff is so much in love with Kathy that when she dies, he summons her spirit: "Haunt me, then. Drive me mad. Only do not leave me in this abyss where I cannot find you." For almost 20 years she haunts him.
Stupendous acting by award-winning actors, and an eerie, hair-raising flute score.
