I've just had a revelation....
OK, aside from the fact that all the guidance you need in life can be gleaned from .38 Special songs......
Public Enemy might just be the most influential band of the '80s, and It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back could well be the best album of the '80s.
Holy sh*t, I'm as white as they come, and I still think this is an amazing album. iTunes isn't happy with me that I'm playlisting it with my metal stuff, but it fits right in.

Then let's put it to the test. What song from .38 Special will assist me with finding my way through Victory Road in Pokemon Platinum?Cail wrote:Kinda surprised me too, but it proves the old saying that He works in mysterious ways.Cagliostro wrote:Ugh. I have no idea what that is (video game? That pre-dates .38 Special), but I'd start with "Hold On Loosely".

Wow...that's amazing. I just needed to let all my Pokemon go except for one, and then turn the game off.
Okay, here's a harder one.
My rebellious friend is not able to find anything in the constitution that says that he has to pay taxes, so he hasn't been paying them. Now the IRS are crawling all over him insisting that he must pay. He has an upcoming court date, and does not want to pay taxes. What song should I refer him to?

Dude, that's too easy...."Never Give an Inch".
In extreme town, it can break down
Anyone who gives it half a chance.
It's a no man's land.
Where the heart beats,
Cold as concrete.
Come to sell their souls
Anyway they can.
Try to understand.
For everyone who makes it,
There's a million
Who get left behind.
The only way to make it out alive. . .
Is to never give an inch,
When you're livin' your life under fire,
Hold on.
Never give an inch,
Never lose sight of your one desire,
You're gone.
Never give an inch,
Take it straight to the end,
Even if it hurts, even if you bleed,
Even if you're down on your knees.
Never give an inch.
Fast walkers, slick talkers,
These are people, people talk about.
The spotlight goes out.
Between the users, and the losers,
There's never any room for any doubt.
You're in or you're out.
For every one that makes it,
There's a million who get left behind.
The only way to make it out alive
Is to never give an inch,

When you're livin' your life under fire,
Hold on.
Never give an inch,
Never lose sight of your one desire,
You're gone.
Never give an inch,
Take it straight to the end,
Even if it hurts, even if you bleed,
Even if you're down on your knees.
Never give an inch.
Some go for desperate measures,
They're under the gun.
I go for grace under pressure,
Standin' my ground, whenever it comes.
Lead Break
For everyone who makes it,
There's a million who get left behind.
The only way to make it out alive
Is to never give an inch,
When you're livin' your life under fire,
Hold on.
Never give an inch
Never lose sight of your one desire,
You're gone.
Never give an inch,
Take it straight to the end,
Even if it hurts, even if you bleed,
Even if you're down on your knees.
Never give an inch.
Never give an inch.

Thanks. I'll pass that on.
My car is making a strange noise. It is a kind of groany noise under the front passenger side. I've brought it in to several car places including the dealership, and everyone fixes it for a day, and then the sound returns the next day. It is worse first thing in the morning, but after driving it for a while, it is fine. I would like it to go away permanently.
.38 Special advice?

My brother and I had this on vinyl back in the 80's and we were continually blown away by it.
For a period there we were listening to it and it's predecessor (Yo! Bum rush the Show!) on a nightly basis.
'It takes a nation .. ' was completely original music-wise, it pre-dated 'Industrial' music and informed thousands of electronic acts to follow; it's influence could also be heard in the 'House' music of the time (which went on to morph into 'techno' and it's billions of barely-different genres)
a lot of the songs on both 'Yo ! Bum Rush the Show' and 'It takes a nation of millions to hold us back' employed more sophisticated sampling pastiches than Public Enemy's peers; their samples were subtle and rarely instantly recognisable - they also used a lot of odd 'found' sounds like sirens and warped screeches and squeals.
If you hear the album these days it's still mighty impressive, but believe me, back in the late 80's it was revolutionary.
I haven't got a lot of time for hip-hop these days, but in the 80's it pushed a lot of boundaries; Public Enemy were at the very forefront.
Chuck D's rapping still stands head and shoulders above %95 of rappers both old and new; he was clever with his wordplay, had a commanding voice and was very political.
great group, particularly during the 3-album run which of 'Yo Bum Rush the Show', 'It takes a nation of millions to hold us back' and 'Fear of a black planet'.
