I tend to agree, but have to confess that I could watch Alan Rickman's character from the first movie all day. Two of my favorite lines (courtesy of IMDB):

"Nice suit. John Phillips, London. I have two myself. Rumor has it Arafat buys his there. Mr. Takagi, I could talk about industrialization and men's fashion all day, but I'm afraid work must intrude..."

"When they touch down, we'll blow the roof, they'll spend a month sifting through rubble, and by the time they figure out what went wrong, we'll be sitting on a beach, earning twenty percent."
... nobody I know.

Those already named are probably it for me.

But here's some honorable mentions that I just love:

-Fight Club (intriguing to say the least)
-Sin City (I didn't see it coming)
-There Will Be Blood (ten minutes, no dialogue, beautiful)
-Matrix

I'd also like to nominate the opening scene from Kill Bill vol. 1. One of the few times I've jumped in cinema. Amazing, chilling - gets me every time, even moreso now 'cause I'm waiting for it...and her performance never gives it away either!

I have exactly the same reaction! Impactful to say the least.

Same for me. The scene totally had me.

I won't gush like a fanboy here, but Kill Bill (Vols 1 & 2) is Tarantino's best work, in my opinion. Amazing in every way.

Good call on the Matrix.

He he! I'll try not to gush like a fanboy, but I agree! Ahem.

Virtuoso. Lord knows I'm not Well's biggest fan, but this is a hell of a way to open a movie.

Nobody mentioned the opening scene from Lost in Translation... Scarlett Johannsen lying on a bed in see through undies... :)

Anyway. As others have mentioned, Saving Private Ryan gets my vote. That opening sequence is amazing.

Another perfect beginning is 'Miller's Crossing'.

That whole movie is perfect!
Actually although Miller's Crossing is one of my faves of all time, I have to admit it is not perfect. One cut that really bugs me is the scenes where Tommy goes to get his hat from Verna-- she eventually inveites him in --- then the next scene is them in HIS apartment... very confusing.
All because of (two?) cut scenes from the script...
