Thomas Covenant--and your Emotions

Post by Lord Mhoram »

Which parts of the Chronicles really made you mad/sad etc.? Foamfollower's 'death' in Hotash Slay and his real death in the Creche made me very sad, Foul portraying the Land as a leprosy-ridden place made me mad! :x

What about YOU?

Pietten. no one else in the land (1st chrons) was ever so twisted from what he should be without a raver. I think his taste for blood was an omen or inspiration to Foul.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Hmm. I think that the way people treated TC in the real world might make me the maddest! :-x That razor blade in the bread makes me see red every time! :-x
Some of the most moving things are Foamy sinking into the lava pit, TC giving release to the souls of the damned Giants, Bannor having the strength to turn his back on vengeance, and Lord Mhoram's Victory. Yes, I cry like a baby in big chunks of TPTP, OK? :D
Love as thou wilt.

I've just read what I think is maybe the most moving section of the whole series: in White Gold Wielder, at the point where the Quest rejoin Sunder & Hollian. Sunder's renewal of commitment to TC is fantastic. Especially when he talks of TC betraying him by giving him such a huge burden, but in spite of this, he pledges himself to him, with no reservation.

Same here, it's the most touching scene of all in the Chronicles.

Also, the moment when Findail explains Foul's trickery to Linden at the One Tree because it raises such a mixture of emotions... rage, hopelessness, sadness, astonishment, weakness...

Third: Covenant stepping into the Banefire... I thought he was going to kill himself and couldn't believe it. Just after defeating samadhi he seemed to give up the ultimate goal, sacrificing himself and finding personal salvation while abandoning the land.
Well, maybe I'm just dumb to take it this way at first. ;)

I've said it elsewhere recently, but Foamfollower finally telling TC the tale of the Giants and why they chose to die at Seareach - and why he did not.

Since I don't want to repeat what others have pointed out (like the Caamora in The Wounded Land or that icky razor blade in Power That Preserves) here're some moments that really got to me:

--That driver in The Illearth War who "knew" all about Thomas Covenant made my blood boil. Alas, this is the type of awfulness we all encounter.
--Same book, when Covenant explains the word "scenery" to Mhoram and others, with the story of the leper woman he knew who tried to teach him how to dance.
--Mhoram's fight with the Raver in Power That Preserves is simply great! At the end I always want to yell out "YESS!!!!"
--In The Wounded Land the chapter called "The Weird of the Waynhim" fascinates and compells me along a pretty wide spectrum.
--Findail's tale of Kastenessen in The One Tree has always evoked compassion in me for some reason.
--Covenant urging the Dead to laugh at the end of Power That Preserves.
--After defeating the Clave, Linden's joy at seeing Covenant in White Gold Wielder is a lovely bit of happiness.
--Pitchwife's tale of how he came to marry the First. *sniff*

There are so many more, but that's a fair sampling.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!!!!!!!

Yeah, I still wince when I think about that. You'd think that someone with Covenant's instinct for protection would know better than to eat food from an unsealed packet that had been left by people who hated him.
I felt a real sense of elation when Brinn defeated ak-Haru kenaustin Ardenol, and a pang of shock when Cail announced that he was going to return to the Merewives. Cail was my actually favourite character in the second chronicles, it's rather annoying that he's been left off of the poll on the front page!
Q. Why do Communists drink herbal tea?
A. Because proper tea is theft.
